  • A train arrives at Sumter yard from Florence SC., August 1980. There are four loaded tie cars on the front end smelling strongly of creosote. Leading is SCL 1534, ex SAL 619 a GP40 delivered in May 1966. The number two spot is SCL 1531, ex SAL 616 a GP40 that was wrecked and retired in November 1983. Trailing is SCL 1784 a U36B delivered in March 1971. The line top center leads to the Eastover Sub Division and Columbia, SC. The line on the right below the tie cars leads to the Lane Sub Division.

  • The "months" in my captions are when I developed the slides, and although I could go through a 36 exposure role pretty quickly, sometimes the film languished in the camera for a month or so... SCL 4721 is a brand spanking new GP16. Ex ACL 222 ex SCL 842 SCL 4721 hasn't been out of the Uceta shop for very long. Her rebuild date was June 1980.
