  • With increasingly dodgy knees, we need something to help us get in and out of the pool. This handrail, we have just had fitted, will be just the ticket.

  • This is the latest car our neighbour is selling. An all black VW Golf R. Best thing about it for me is the sound of the engine. The thing is in all the pictures of recent Golf Rs that I have found they have 4 exhaust pipes and this has two. The rear lights are different as well. It looks like it could be a 2011 model. I doubt if it can claim one careful lady owner.

  • Here we go again. When the leak in the main water pipe in the street that cracked our garden wall was repaired, we hoped that would be the end. Sadly, that has not been the case. Not 50 metres further down the street, we have another leak. We first spotted mould at the bottom of the wall that separates us from the street (bearing in mind that our house is a good metre and a half below the street). The mould started to spread and then we noticed the paving was wet - time to call the water board! Here they are, like a couple of rappers showing off their pants as they drill down through the concrete. PS It's the same guys that repaired the leak last time.

  • Two large bags of gravel for this part of the garden were delivered yesterday. Eight am this morning,, the gardeners arrived to spread the gravel out. Now the whole garden is covered with a layer of this even sized white gravel.

  • Since we now have the whole of the garden covered in gravel, we decided to have planters to bring back some colour. They're mostly green at the moment but that won't last. Hopefully, we will have a succession of flowers throughout the summer into autumn.

  • At fist glance I thought the Council had laid paving blocks on this street but apparently that is not so. I am reliably informed this is tarmac that has been patterned to look like paving. The pavements either side though are specially commissioned paving stones that symbolise the town.

  • When I was painting from a photograph, I used to draw the composition on the painting surface as best I could to try and get the perspective and proportions right. That was until Pam bought me a digital projector one Christmas. Now, I connect the projector to my iPad and use that to make an accurate drawing ready for painting. Some may say it is cheating but is it? David Hockney postulates in his book, "Secrets of the Old Masters" that artists going back to the 14th century made use of lenses and mirrors to create accurate drawings. Not all of course but many did and the evidence for his argument is entirely convincing. Where an artist has drawn without such aids, there is usually evidence of a searching to get the form right. In drawings using optical devices, there is no such evidence.

  • To be honest, the main street of Bigastro is not the prettiest sight. It is an incongruous mixture of shops, blocks of flats and the odd abandoned building. If you were being charitable, you'd say it had character. I have no idea how long the old houses that occupied this land had been abandoned. Well, no more - they are gone.

  • After over 50 years using the studio easel that my Grandmother bought me for my 21st birthday, I thought it was time for something new. This beauty in red oak came from the USA - shipped by courier from the UK to Spain. PS That canvas will need tightening when I’m finished!

  • Many moons ago I had a twin lens Rollieflex 3.5f with a built in Gossen light meter and a Zeiss Planar taking lens. I sold it to buy another camera and have regretted doing so many times since. Rollies, like mine, are now collectible and come at inflated prices. I could not justify £1,000 upwards to buy another. On the other hand, cameras like this Mamiya 645 are affordable because they are mainly bought by enthusiasts. The 645 format was popular with wedding photographers a) because of its rectangular negatives and b) because you get 15 pictures on a roll of 120 film. These cameras are lighter than 6x6cm format cameras like the Hasselblad and a ton lighter than the 6x7cm format cameras. I picked this one up online from a specialist dealer in the UK and it arrived yesterday. I've yet to run some film through it but upon testing and close inspection everything seems to work as it should. My intention is to initially use it with black and white film, send the rolls to the UK for development and possibly scanning. I don't intend to develop my own film in the future but I will try scanning the negatives using my DSLR, a negative holder and a light pad. Going back to setting everything manually (focus, shutter speed and aperture) and measuring light with a handheld meter will impose some much needed discipline back to my photography. However, I won't be abandoning my digital cameras -that would be madness. People ask, “which is better, digital or analogue photography?” The answer is neither is better, they are just different in the way that vinyl records and digital music are different. PS Mamiya made various models of this camera including ones that had mirror lockup, shutters that went to 1/000th second, removable film backs and various prism hoods ncluding ones that offered auto exposure.

  • It's not like you need an excuse to go out for a meal with friends. However, Pam and I first came to live in Bigastro 15 years ago and so we invited Pepe and Eladia to join us at Bar Pujante yesterday for a celebratory lunch. Little did we suspect that they would mark the occasion by preparing a delicious soplillo dessert, complete with candles, for us. For those of you who have not tried this local speciality, we highly recommend it. A huge thanks to Eladia and Pepe, you are the best neighbours and friends anyone could wish for.

  • My friend Pete says the Citigo is an interesting car and he is right. For a third of the price of my Karoq, it offers a decent amount of space for passengers and their luggage. Pam's car is also not one you would lose in a car park.

  • My previous car was just over six years old and had only 36,000 Kms onl the clock. There was no logical reason to change it. However, this is its replacement - a 1.5l Automatic Skoda Karoq with all sorts of interesting technologies like adaptive cruise control, a virtual cockpit and an array of sensors around the car. Behind it, not to be left out, is Pam's replacement Citigo which is a lot smarter looking than the old one.
