  • Althofen, market community Administrative history or biographical information: The area around Althofen, the Krappfeld, came in 953 by a donation of Otto I to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The name Althofen is first mentioned in the middle of the 11th century. Administratively, the Krappfeld belonged to the county Friesach. From the three counties (Friesach, Lurn and Jaun) on Carinthian soil since the 11th century, the later administrative units, the courts and the district courts emerged. The Salzburg district court Krappfeld (Althofen) originated directly from the archiepiscopal immunity area. In Althofen sat the land judge of the Salzburg district court at Krappfeld and also the bailiff of the Urbaramtes (administrative units in the Middle Ages) Althofen. The place Althofen was already referred to in 1268 as a market and formed a judicial district under its own market judge. The result was a flourishing market, whose citizens lived very well of the staple right for the Hüttenberger Eisen (ore mining) as well as their right of first refusal for this iron. The 1307 moved to the hill market was fortified and expanded the castle. In 1479, the town was given a coat of arms, which makes the reference to the iron trade. At the beginning of the 16th century, Althofen, after tough struggle since the end of the 14th century, lost the right of first refusal to St. Veit, but kept scale and toll for the iron. From the early 17th century Treibach developed with blast furnace and hammer works as the seat of the iron processing at the foot of the market settlement. Carl Auer Ritter von Welsbach acquired this factory in 1897 after its decommissioning and later founded the Treibacher Chemical Works. 1806, the Salzburg possessions were converted into state rule and thus the long ownership history of the Archdiocese of Salzburg in the area Althofen, as at all in Carinthia, ended. After 1848, the district court became the smaller county court and Althofen became a political local community, which merged in 1871 with the local community Treibach to a market town. In 1993, the latter finally obtained the right to use the name Stadtgemeinde (township). Althofen, Markt Verwaltungsgeschichte oder biographische Angaben: Die Gegend um Althofen, das Krappfeld, kam 953 durch eine Schenkung Ottos I. an das Erzbistum Salzburg. Der Name Althofen wird erstmals Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts genannt.
