  • Bong Bong Pass, Illawarra Escarpment west of Dapto, New South Wales It appears that this red clay soil is derived from sandstone, judging from the frequent rock fragments like this. If so, this sandstone must have a higher clay content than the Hawkesbury sandstone that's present everywhere around Sydney.

  • Bong Bong Pass, Illawarra Escarpment west of Dapto, New South Wales These trees have probably grown up in the road verge in the 160 or more years since the road was put up the pass. It is slow-growing compared to many other rainforest trees. It looks like the road up through the pass would have been wide enough for horse carts, although some of the short pinches across rock ledges appeared almost too steep for a cart. I suspect its main use was as a bridle track and for moving cattle and sheep.

  • Bong Bong Pass, Illawarra Escarpment west of Dapto, New South Wales The lower part of the old road where it climbs up a steep spur through tall eucalypt forest. Can this red clay soil be derived from sandstone?

  • The afternoon train to Dunmore, 1933 is seen here storming up through Avondale, south of Dapto on the single line section of the South Coast Line. This train was traditionally the last train before the commuter peak started, and would always run exactly on time out of Enfield and arrive at Dunmore just before 5pm. It would then load for about 3 hours and depart close to 9pm back to Sydney.
