  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Booral can be accessed from Newcastle via the Bucketts Way turnoff at 12 Mile Creek just before the Karuah off ramp or from the north via Bulahdelah across a dangerous road to Girvan, home of the tallest residential building in Australia. The building at Girvan, built by Peter Gray, is something to see as it is built on top of a hill in a totally rural setting surrounded by forest but at 10 storeys high it has more than adequate views as far to Stockton Bight and the lights of Newcastle. I understand it has just been sold but I have not heard if the building is to be maintained as a private residence or be used for some other purpose. Somewhere I have some photos which I'll try to locate and post to Flickr. Alternatively Booral can be accessed by driving south down the Bucketts Way from Gloucester.

It has been the social hub of the community since that time, as well as being the safe repository of the community's treasured Honour Boards and WW1 Community War Souvenirs. It sees regular usage in the vital role of school hall and is a well used and loved venue in the heart of this small, country community. Hall Capacity 120 people. Reference

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Its on this weekend, and I hope to get there this year after several failed attempts in past years. 2012 marks the 52nd annual festival held between the four Stroud towns - Stroud, NSW, Australia, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England; Stroud, Oklahoma, USA and Stroud, Ontario, Canada. This annual event is held in each of the countries on the third Saturday in July each year. "The first Brick Throwing contest was held in 1960 between Stroud, U.S.A. and Stroud, UK – both having brickworks. The following year the Canadian and Australian Strouds were invited to join the contest. Stroud Australia made its mark in 1962 when the town suggested a rolling pin throwing contest be included on the program – “so the sheila’s could join in the fun.” All competition rolling pins are made in Stroud, Australia, and shipped to each participating country. Competition bricks are also specially made and weigh 5 lb (2.27 kilograms) while the rolling pins weigh in at a dainty 2 lb (just under one kilogram). Records Each year Australia’s results are forwarded to the USA where international results are compiled and participating countries are notified of the result. All weights and measurements are calculated using imperial measurements in keeping with the other competing countries. Brick throw record - held by United States at 142’6″ (43.2816 m) Rolling pin throw - held by England at 156’4″ (47.5488 m) The Competition The competition involves six-person teams with points scored by the top ten individual throws. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded in each event. Team points are compiled and the winning team is awarded a trophy and the privilege of competing in the international throw." Reference The day commences at 10.30am with a procession through the main street led by International Town Crier Mr. Graham Keating, to the showground where the day's activities will take place. A program of events such as wood chopping, tug-o-war, market stalls, professional foot races and other novelty events that take place throughout the day. A truly unique & thoroughly entertaining day out!
