  • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The Comboyne Plateau was, before white settlement, covered in dense warm temperate and subtropical rainforest. When the Comboyne Shield Volcano erupted some 16 million years ago it spread basaltic lava across a more than 20 square kilometre area, today revealing itself by the rich red soils across the entire plateau. Farming practices of the early days saw no value in retaining the forests and they were cleared for dairy cattle and today Comboyne is barely recognisable for what it once was. A few local farmers have preserved remnants of the former expansive rainforest and on some of these properties can be found some of the lowest occuring Nothofagus moorei - Antarctic Beech trees at 570 to 630 metres above sea level in NSW. These remnant trees survive only because individual farmers respect their right to exist on their private properties. There is no Nothofagus moorei held in reserves, including none in Boorganna Nature Reserve. We can only guess at what species of animals and plants might once have existed here and no doubt a number of species were entirely wiped out by state governments policies which encouraged farmers to clear the land. The latest commercial activity to arrive on the Comboyne Plateau is Avocado farming with widespread clearing of many of the remaining small remnants now happening as farmers seek to establish a monoculture of Avocado trees across the plateau. Big agricultural companies like Costa Agricultural Enterprises have made the plateau home and once again the remaining remnant rainforests are under threat as these big companies seek to plant out every square metre of the landscape under Avocado trees. Nearby Boorganna Nature Reserve, one of NSW's first declared nature reserves, survives but only because its predominantly located on steeper land. Following recent plantings, Avocado trees can now be found right up to the the boundaries of Boorganna Nature Reserve. Nothofagus moorei - Comboyne

Any ID assistance welcomed Possibly Xanthorrhoea australis or Xanthorrhoea malacophylla. Apparently planted 30 years ago. Although it looks much older to me the owners suggested the plant might have been at least 60 years old. Lenore & Ray Dixon's Garden at Comboyne, NSW

  • A thicket of trees on a farm. About twenty trees made up only of the Jackwood & Golden Sassafras. (Doryphora sassafras). The farmer called the laurel "brown beech", which is one of the listed common names of this species. He's quite right to call it so, though none of the other guys in the group know it as that. Plenty of ferns, lichens and orchids growing on these trees. This plateau was almost entirely cleared between 1900 and 1925. This tiny little patch is of original trees. Surrounded by farmland. The rainforests around here are all warm temperate. Despite growing on red/brown "krasnozem" soils, derived from basalt. With the sub tropical climate, volcanic soils and high rainfall, one would expect sub tropical rainforest here. However, the streams on the Comboyne plateau are often subject to unusually cold winters, which would assist the cool tolerant plants such as Doryphora sassafras. Other farms in Comboyne have remnant patches. Some are made up of sub tropical species, such as the Australian Rose Mahogany, which is a common species in nearby Boorganna Nature Reserve, (Dysoxylum fraserianum). My heavy black camera ran out of batteries. So, I used the little compact camera for this photo. In 1925 the botanist E.C. Chisholm surveyed the remains of the Comboyne rainforests.
