  • The Manning River, next to the camp ground in Woko National Park. Taken as the sun was getting low, so there was a nice bit of colour in the water. I was camping in a different area on the Manning River, but this camp ground was beautiful (and empty!) I think I'll head here for a trip in the future.

  • Dry rainforest is just about the most common form of rainforest in New South Wales, Australia. This rainforest type is classified as depauperate or "dry". The etymology of the word depauperate suggests it is "a pauper". Perhaps it's less than the richer world of the wetter subtropical rainforest. Pauper or not, it's worth a look. Palms are absent or rare (I didn't see any here). And ferns are not as common as in the nearby sub tropical rainforests. The canopy is low, around 10 to 20 metres. This photo shows the sort of scenery I expect in this dry rainforest. Plenty of vines, a low canopy, lots of shatterwood trees and the occasional eucalyptus. In shot, up the back is a Sydney Blue Gum. The tree at the left is the Shatterwood (Backhousia sciadophora). Shatterwood is so named, as the timber shatters and breaks when fallen. Well, that's the story, maybe it is true. Two dangerous types of stinging trees were common here. As well as the vicious thorny vine, Maclura cochinchinensis. An interesting find was a seldom noticed tree in the citrus family, Geijera salicifolia. Very common was the red kamala (Mallotus philippensis) and yellow persimmon (Diospyros australis). Soils here are shallow, with plenty of exposed rocks. Most of which are covered in lichen and moss. What I didn't expect, was the rainforest upstream, up the mountain. Many tall trees grew up the gully. Red cedar, white cedar, stinging trees, flame tree, strangler figs, rosewood, bollygum, booyong and others to 35 metres tall or more. Not only that, but superb smaller plants as well, such as the tiny Peperomia tetraphylla and the fern, Pellaea nana. Ferns were common in this dry rainforest, and plenty of orchids too, mostly in the Dendrobium group. It's always a lot of fun to investigate a rainforest in New South Wales, there's so much to see. Often there's a loud crashing and thumping sound of a kangaroo or wallaby rushing away. And when I was in this place a couple of days ago, I saw quite a few tiny miniature kangaroos, known as pademelons. When I returned to the car, I had the door open, and a couple of blue wrens decided to hop inside, and eat the crumbs on the floor of the car. Discarded from my absent fiance, who loves to eat when driving with me.
