  • Seen here at Lithgow State Mine in 2018. The 49 class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the New South Wales Government Railways between 1960 and 1964. The 49 class was ordered in three batches each of six locomotives. They entered service in the Western Region of New South Wales and hauled trains on all branchlines as well as mainlines west of Lithgow. They periodically travelled as far afield as Moree in the north-west and Cootamundra in the south-west. Info source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales_49_class_locomotive

  • Building was former branch of E.S. & A. Bank (English, Scottish & Australian Bank Limited) which merged with ANZ in 1970 to form Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. Some history of ES&A Bank here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English,_Scottish_and_Australian_Ba... "The building is an architecturally interesting example of consistent gothic revival detailing applied to a 19th century commercial building. It is well designed for its corner site and contributes significantly to the streetscape. It is externally intact. This bank is widely recognised as having significant aesthetic appeal. Particularly grand and imposing it contributes greatly to the streetscape. Its church-like grandeur on the Main Street gives the building special landmark qualities, accentuated by its corner position. It demonstrates the wealth and optimism of banking institutions in the mid to late Victorian era." Info source: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDe...

  • The building is held in high regard for its links with the local community especially the families of volunteers/retained firemen. It has historical association with the local community since commencing its operation. A brown brick asymmetrical impressive one and two storey building with a dominant Federation Free Classical style front façade, combining garaging and residential quarters. The gable front to the residential section has a timber bargeboard with the lettering "1915" in the gable and below is a protruding timber balcony supported by large timber decorative brackets, with a gable roof and a matching bargebooard with timber shingle gable infill and timber posts, and timber balcony rail and infill below. Timber French doors open onto the balcony and below a pair of timber casement with fixed upper panes have a brick sill. The engine bay has a brick parapet with some painted rendered detail divided into three by brick detail, and the lettering "FIRE NSWFB STATION" on the three sections. The detail at the top of the parapet is repeated above the engine bay door but is larger and forms a small awning. The front façade is built to the street frontage and a concrete driveway is beside the engine bay. Info source: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDe...

  • The Lithgow Coal Stage Signal Box is of state significance as a large and imposing elevated timber signal box that has remained in continuous operation since 1925. The signal box retains most of its original equipment and is an excellent example of a traditional early 1900's elevated timber railway signal box, sympathetically adapted to operate electric light signals and power activated points mechanisms. It is now one of the largest signal boxes remaining from a relatively small sub-group of standard railway building types. Located close to Eskbank Railway Station, the signal box has strong associations with the surrounding industrial history of Lithgow, and remains as an important element in the evolution of railway operations in the area. Lithgow Coal Stage Box is the third built in this locality and was constructed in 1925 to cater for the expanded marshalling yards and locomotive depot which replaced the original Eskbank loco Depot. It was a standard design of the period. The box takes its name from the 1888 unique on-line overhead coaling bunker, now demolished, but which existed when the box was built and was situated immediately westwards. It controlled access to and from the locomotive depot, local colliery branch lines as well as locomotives using the 1888 on-line overhead coaling bunker. Initially, it contained 64 mechanical levers but now many of those are not in use. In 1957 with electrification of the Lithgow Yard its signalling system was adapted for changing technology including electric light signalling. The original timber steps have been replaced by metal steps. Info source: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDe...
