  • Grenfell NSW. "Australia is known for its big things. There is the Big Cherries in Young, the Big Merino in Goulburn, the Big Gold Panner in Bathurst and the list goes on. In Grenfell, we have the Big Gold Pick and Pan! The pick and pan were constructed under the supervision of the Grenfell Men's Shed, and was built in recognition of Grenfell's significant contribution to the Australian gold era during the mid to late 1860s. Located between the Goods Shed and historic Station Building at the old Railway Station precinct, just off the northern end of West Street." • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Grenfell’s historic Railway Hotel celebrated a milestone December 6 2014, when it became 100 years old. "The original Railway Hotel was built in 1879 with the license in the Name of Ellen Rich. The license was transferred to Alfred Rich in 1881. Thomas McFarland took over the license in 1883 and shortly after changed the name to The Osborne Hotel. The next publican was Robert Johnson followed by William Dawson. In 1899, Joseph Thompson, a new arrival to Grenfell, purchased the Hotel. In 1900 the name was changed to The Railway Hotel by Joseph in anticipation of the arrival of the Railway line from Koorawatha. The last publican to operate the Old Railway Hotel was Thomas Toohey who purchased the Hotel of Joseph Thompson in 1908. The current Railway Hotel building was built in 1914 by Joseph Thompson, for Thomas Toohey, including the adjoining shops that run along Main St, and it remained a very popular watering hole amongst the locals. The Railway Hotel is also famous for it’s appearance in the Australian Film “1915” starring Sigrid Thornton. Sigrid is known to have made the iconic staircase, featured frequently in the film, a very popular attraction. Built with Queensland maple and situated above the old Hotel office (also featured throughout the film). The staircase has certainly held it’s structure and old world charm as it still remains in excellent condition today. The current owners, sisters, Laurel Schiemer and Carol Logan purchased the Hotel off Greg Evans of Wagga in 2001 and continue to provide an excellent venue for the community including accommodation and the popular Fettlers Restaurant." • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images As far as I can find out the NAB must have moved to a new building in Main St after 1956. In 2018 the NAB finally closed the Grenfell NAB Bank Branch siting lack of custom as the reason for the closure. The National Australia Bank’s decision to pull out of Grenfell at that time left the Weddin Shire without a single branch of any of the ‘big four’ banks.

  • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The following text is from the Facebook page of Explored Visions "The Grenfell Flour Mill was completed in 1876 under the ownership of Mr C J Ingrey and Mr Mathieson. The mill was taken over by Henry Allsopp in 1897 following Mr Ingrey’s death. The mill was destroyed by fire in December 1898 and following rebuilding, it re-opened with entirely new machinery in 1901 as the Challenge Mill, now owned by Mr Black. Several owners operated the mill over the next few decades. The mill closed around 1930, which was a huge inconvenience to local farmers wishing to have their grain milled locally. In late 1943, the mill was purchased by J J Sullivan & Co who converted the mill from steam power to an electric powered plant. Production was almost exclusively for the war effort. The Challenge Flour Mill eventually closed in the 1960s." Reference -Trove Grenfell Record - Saturday December 17th 1898 The mill, owned by Mrs. C. J. Ingrey, was insured in the United— the building for £700, machinery for £750. Tho property is estimated to have been worth between £3000 and £4000 ; a little more than twelve months ago modern roller machin- ery was put in at a cost of over £1000. The lessee, Mr. Henry Allsopp, had his stock insured for £1200 in the Australian Mutual Fire Co. It will thus be seen that the individual losses are very heavy, Mrs. Ingrey being the greatest sufferer. Fuller details will be presented after the inquest has been held. - Among contents destroyed in mill were about 660 bags of wheat, nearly 500 bags of flour, and some 500 bags of bran and pollard. Any information is welcomed.
