  • The Magpie-larks love foraging on our new bit of 'lawn' in Bridgetown, even in the rain. This is female bird - someone told me a good way to remember which is which is that the girl has a clean face and the boy a dirty one - bit stereotyped but it helps me :) Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble ~ Instagram

  • This young bird is just starting to moult into his adult plumage - he is probably about 18 months old. The adult male Western Whistlers (previously Golden Whistlers but the eastern and western forms have been split) are a stunning bird, easy to recognise, but the females and young birds are a bit harder to identify. • This feels like a very Australian image - think its the colours combined with the female Magpie-Lark, an ubiquitous Aussie bird. Lovely to have a few hanging out on our block in Bridgetown, eating some of the bugs. Interestingly they are considered a giant monarch flycatcher! • As you can probably guess, I have been practising a bit with my macro lens. These are just some ants on the back patio feasting on something edible. Very interesting to look at them more closely. Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble ~ Instagram

  • Another shot of a couple of the busy paper wasps. In the comments I have put (or tried to) a wider shot of the whole nest that shows some of the larvae and more of the wasps. Let me know if it doesn't show up :) Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble ~ Instagram

  • A group of paper wasps built their impressively hexagonal nest on the wall near the garage door in Bridgetown. They were very busy feeding their larvae and not too worried about me getting close so I was able to get a few interesting shots. Sadly the following day I saw some ants had found the nest and were crawling all over it - the wasps seemed very reluctant to do anything about the ants. • There are heaps of these honeyeaters in the garden that borders our block in Bridgetown. They can be quite aggressive towards many other species, chasing them off what they seem to think are their personal bushes. This one seems to have had its head in something red recently. • This was quite an amazing sight one evening in Bridgetown, where the sun was fairly low in the sky with a very dense cloud of smoke between us and the sun. The fire was in forests between Nannup and Bridgetown and must have been very smoky. Luckily it didn't cause any major problems. Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble ~ Instagram

  • A Yellow-rumped Thornbill with some moth munchies. Quite challenging little guys to capture; even though they let you get quite close, they never keep still and they are so small the grass is forever getting in the way even though it is kept quite short on this bit of lawn. • A female Splendid Fairy-wren on a gloomy day in Bridgetown. She was in the trees on the edge of our property down there - hoping to provide lots more habitat for them when the builders are finished and we can start on the garden planting. Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble

  • I observed some interesting behaviour from a group of Tree Martins a few weeks ago in Bridgetown. They were landing on the ground and then flying off with leaves in their beaks, presumably for their nests. The odd thing was they were concentrating on one very specific spot - I guess they were after the leaves from a certain tree? Nature in Focus ~ 500px ~ G+ ~ Redbubble
