  • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images What became known as the 'Rumba Dump Fire' had been burning uncontrolled for some time in Tapin Tops National Park in late October and early to mid November 2019. A small team of under seriously resourced National Parks Fire crews had been battling the fire with some success and were close to bringing the fire under control when a fire broke out in Crowdy Head National Park. This fire had potential to impact Harrington, Johns River and other scattered small settlement on the fringes of the Crowdy Bay National Park. Owing to the perceived greater threat the decision was made to withdraw NPWS fire crews from the Rumba Dump blaze and assign them to Crowdy Head National Park. At the time this undoubtedly appeared the right decision however the Rumba Dump fire would not be denied its place in history. Started by a lightning bolt and by this time now unchallenged the Rumba Dump fire began grow in size and fury. As far as my investigation reveal on Monday night 11th November, 2019, the Rumba Dump fire roared through dry and wet sclerophyll forest and began to threaten the small Bulga Plateau community of Elands, surrounded by subtropical rainforest. The village of Elands, not far from Elenborough Falls, and its rainforest buffer offered a chance of slowing the fire but it was not to be, so volatile were the conditions in place following the worst drought in the history of the areas white settlement. The Rumba Dump Fire burned perilously close to Elands and entered the privately owned 375 hectare voluntary conservation agreement land parcel known as the Oxygen Farm, much of which was pristine subtropical rainforest. The Oxygen Farm borders Elands Village and in 1989 was saved from logging by a consortium of private buyers who purchased a 386 hectare land parce and named it the 'Oxygen Farm'. On Monday night 11th November 2019 the Rumba Dump fire began seriously threatening the Oxygen Farm and Elands and burned into wet sclerophyll, gully and subtropical rainforest. Local Elands residents were evacuated. Urgent and drastic measures were to be required to save the village. The seemingly draconian idea that a containment line be bulldozed through the middle of the Oxygen Farm's pristine subtropical Rainforest was agreed to and the order was carried out as evidenced in the image above . On February 27th 2020 when I walked into the Oxygen farm from Elands Village I was not expecting to see what I saw behind the rainforest that abuts the main road. Having walked in there on several previous occasions, I was just 30 metres along the track when the canopy opened up to blue sky. I was shocked but as I walked beyond the track it became clear why the track had been carved through lush rainforest. The fire had not only burned right to the edge of the rainforest it had in fact actually burned into the rainforest. While the rainforest acted as a fire suppressant it was fortunate that the prevailing winds were also favourable that day and fire didn't burn as far as the bulldozed containment line. It did however get to within 30 metres of the containment line before fire crews were able to extinguish it and effectively save Elands village. Although the Rumba Dump Fire did destroy a large chunk of pristine rainforest in the Oxygen Farm the property was largely saved by virtue of the fact that the expected southerly winds abated. From what I can gather Elands, like Bobin a few days earlier, was denied adequate resources to fight the threat of the advancing fire. As far as I can find out just one local brigade with 6 members was on hand to protect the Bulga Plateau community which numbers 200-300 people in the broad area. Nowhere in my investigations have I heard of any aerial support at Elands although I would welcome any correction. The devastation of the Bobin community a few days earlier on Friday 8th November where 18 homes and the local school burned down was well and truly in the minds of Elands residents who sought shelter by evacuating wherever they felt safe away from the fire threat. It was fortunate that no homes were lost at Elands however the control line through the Oxygen Farm has left an indelible reminder of the serious threat the village faced.
