  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The sign in this video says it all - 'Dead Zone'. It certainly was. No signs of any fauna life anywhere but first signs of opportunistic grasses and weeds as well as some epicormic regrowth beginning to sprout on the charred eucalypts. The fire that burned so incredible strongly and hot through this area on November 8th 2019 was a crown fire, ie a fire that spreads through the tree tops. This fire began on private property at Hillville and was believed to have started when a pile of chicken manure spontaneously combusted. The East Coast of NSW had been experiencing the worst drought ever recorded and the landscape here, previously known as Kiwarrak State Forest, had been extensively logged by the NSW Forestry Corporation over many years. Some years ago however most of what was Kiwarrak State Forest was reclassified as Talawahl State Conservation Area. With so much fuel on the ground, including logging residue, conditions were ripe for a devastating fire and a devastaing fire is what we got. The Hillville Fire, spread quickly through Talawahl State Conservation Area and south into the adjoining Talawahl Nature Reserve crossing the Pacific Highway from Purfleet to Failford and continuing on its destructive way into Khappinghat National Park and burning all the way to the coast between Saltwater and Diamond Beach. The Hillville Fire eventually reached Failford Road and was only prevented from extending further south by the fact that just 2 weeks earlier the Darawank Fire had burned all the territory south and east of Failford Road. Communities at Koorainghat, Kiwarrak Heights Estate and Rainbow Flat copped the full brunt of what must have been an incredibly hot and ferocious fire as almost nowhere remained unburned, even grassy field were no barrier. Many home were lost before the fire eventually threatened Tallwoods Village, Diamond Beach, Wallabi Point and Old Bar. Meanwhile around the same time the Hillville Fire was at its destructive worst, further up in the Manning Valley to the north west, a dry lightning strike had caused an ignition at Rumba Dump in Tapin Tops National Park west of Wingham. It became known as the Rumba Dump Fire. It burned destructively all the way to Upper Lansdowne through communities at Bobin and Killabakh. As the Rhumba Dump Fire was savaging the landscape in the upper Manning Valley another fire ignited in Crowdy Head National Park and both fires stretched resources to the limit because not long after these fires began other devastating fires began burning up and down the coast and ranges resulting in NSW experiencing its most destructive and widespread fire season since white settlement began in Australia.

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Most of Talawahl Nature Reserve was burnt out by the Hillville Bushfire of November 8th 2019 but finally some of the small creeks got a top up after good rains fell across the area from February 8th 2020 and epicormic growth has begun the renewal process. Despite natures efforts here in Talawahl Nature Reserve it will be a long way back as this clearly was not just any fire. It totally obliterated this once healthy reserve. I saw no signs of any fauna and its entirely possible some species here may not recover at all. www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-09/firefighters-drive-through...

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images After taking Coates Road from the Blackbutts Road junction we drove through Talawahl Nature Reserve, decimated by the Hillville Fire which burnt rapidly throught this area on 8th November 2019. Once we exited the Nature Reserve we soon came to normally idyllic Clarendon Farm, famous as a farm stay, set on private property and surounded by of Talawahl Nature Reserve. We drove on along Coates Road till we reached Possum Brush Road, also impacted by the Hillville Fire. My brothers old property, a substantial mud brick home that he had built in the 1980's was very fortunate to have survived as it was only luck that the owners of the at the time rented property decided to come and check on the place. They discovered fire in the roof space that the renters were unaware of and the fire was able to be quickly put out. The property, known as Blue Skies, was burnt all around the house as was the case for several other homes on Possum Brush Road but fortunately no homes were lost along the road.

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The devastating Hillville Bushfire passed through Talawahl Nature Reserve on November 8th 2019. Good rains from the 8th February 2020 have significantly contributed to natures plan to restore the area. Despite its best intentions nature is going to face an uphill battle as so much of Talawahl Nature Reserve was litterally obliterated. It likely some flora and fauna species may even be pushed toward localised extinction.
