  • Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The property Avalon was first taken up by John Wright, the founder of Tuncurry, NSW in 1878. At that time the area including the nearby town of Krambach was known as Larry's Flat. John Wright originally called the property Fairview but later it was changed to Avalon because the postal name Fairview was in use for another town. Avalon Homestead was built in 1901 and was one of several large houses built for the various managers of different businesses operating on Avalon from Tuncurry. This house pictured above was one of the managers houses and was home to Edwin and Alicia Wright who managed the Avalon Shop. John Wright also built a substantial house for his own visitation to Avalon. It was to the east of this Avalon home, the site being selected because of its good view and its soil on which he established a fine orchard. I am uncertain when that house was demolished. During the sawmilling years of the 1880-90's and early 1900's, with a large sawmill, a shop, hall, a wheat mill, and more than 15 sawmill worker cottages, John Wright's Avalon was a small private town, bigger than nearby Krambach. The wheat mill and sawmilling operations were managed by Sidney Garden Wright. He resided at John Wright's nearby property, Silverfern until 1925 when it was sold to the Department of Repatriation for soldier settlement. Silverfern was broken up and Sid Wight then purchased Logan Leigh on the Wallamba River at Nabiac. In circa 1918 reduced timber supplies, weakening demand and other problems following John Wright's death intestate in 1910 led to the Avalon sawmill being closed. The former wheat mill was dismantled, and reassembled at John Wright's shipyards on the waterfront in Tuncurry and became an engineering shed and Dolph Ohma's Drafting Shed from which many of the ships built at the Wright Shipyards emerged. When the Avalon mill closed the Tuncurry sawmill became the main supplier of timber to the Wright Shipyards until 1954 by which time the mill was electric. It burnt down however and was not rebuilt. Following the death of Ernest Wright in 1946 the shipyards continued under Ernest Wright's son John for a few more years though until the last Wright Shipyards built boat, the Santa Cruz, was finally launched in 1954, having sat on the blocks since Ernest Wright's death in 1946. With John Wright's 99 year lease on the waterfront land at Tuncurry coming to an end, the shipyards finally closed in 1958 and the land was entirely cleared and gazetted as John Wright Park in 1966.
