I have not previously uploaded this photo but thought it worth showing. Explore 327 briefly

  • Opened on October 3rd, 1888, the first Metropolitan Tunnel was part of the original railway line connecting Sydney to the South Coast of NSW. The 624m single track tunnel is on a 1 in 55 grade falling south (upgrade for Sydney bound trains). The tunnel is located in Helensburgh adjacent to the first Helensburgh Railway Station; which opened on January 1st, 1889. Both the railway station and tunnel closed, when the railway was deviated on a new alignment with easier grades, on May 30th, 1915. On the southern end of the tunnel, a concrete wall has been erected by Australia’s official oldest coal mine, The Metropolitan Colliery, opened in 1888 by the then Metropolitan Coal Company of Sydney Limited. The Colliery has leased the tunnel for many years and use it as a dam for mining purposes and dust management. In years past the whole tunnel has been literally full of water to the point where you couldn't enter. The tunnel and immediate surroundings have become home to Glow Worms, which can be seen in this view, on the roof of the tunnel. Pictured here is the northern portal. Friday, 7th June 2019.
