  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Merriwa is a small prosperous town located half way between Newcastle and Dubbo on the Golden Highway. Driving into Merriwa its easy to miss this impressive painted silo so keep an eye out to the distant right as you drive into town. This mural, painted by artist David Lee Pereira of the international art management company Authority Creative, was two years in design and painting phases and was the first GrainCorp site in NSW to join the silo art trail. Completed on the 23rd April 2019 the artist used 280 litres of paint and 160 litres of primer to complete the Merriwa Silos Project. The silos became the 29th silos to be included in the Australian Silo Art Trail Collection. In the weeks ahead I hope to post more images of some of these silos in the Australian Silo Art Trail Collection. The Merriwa mural depicts an image, rather oddly, of sheep wearing red socks in a canola field. The idea evolved from Merriwa's annual June Long Weekend Festival of the Fleeces which features a parade event called "The Running of the Sheep". Apparently one of the sponsors of the event was unable to give money, instead offering red socks. The festival committee took the offer seriously and soon came up with the idea of dressing the parade running sheep in them. This was an instant hit with festival goers and a has become iconic of this small Merino wool producing country town. After meeting with local representatives and school children artist David Lee Pereira made the decision to immortalise the red socked sheep in a canola field as his subject on this colourful Merriwa mural.
