  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images On 26th October 2019 a potentially catastrophic fire began at Failford which ended up travelling under strong north west winds to the Scribbly Gum Estate off Aquatic Road which leads to Wallamba Ski Lodge. The fire jumped the Lakes Way and burned all the way to Black Head where it threatened Hallidays Shores over 55 Retirement Village before jumping Black Head Road and threatening homes at Tallwoods Village. I ended up evacuating from my home to Taree overnight and took this image next morning. .

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images These buildings in Albert St Taree were built in 1902 (Left) and 1935 (Right) however public education in Taree formally commenced in 1865. The school celebrated its 150th Anniversary with an open day on Friday 6th November 2015. There are no physical artifacts remaining as evidence of the early Denominational or National Schools established prior to 1866 in the Manning District, or of the first generation of public schools established prior to the Public Instruction Act of 1880. Some History of Taree & Immediate District William Wynter is regarded as the first successful white settler in the Manning Valley after taking up land at Taree Estate in 1829 however the private township of Taree was developed on land granted to Henry Flett in 1854. An earlier private town developed by James Martin had previously existed from 1841 at Chatham, now a suburb just north of the Taree CBD . Cundletown was developed by the Manning River Company in 1854. Any corrections to fact or further information related to the history of Taree Public School is welcomed.

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Family Rhamnaceae I'd never come across this plant species until a year ago when a friend promised me he would do a graft for me taken from his own small tree in Taree, NSW, Australia. Today 25th October 2019 he gave me a small grafted Jujube plant which I will attempt to grow on in my nursery. Read more about this plant at Wikipedia. A small deciduous tree or shrub reaching a height of 5–12 metres (16–39 ft), usually with thorny branches. The leaves are shiny-green, ovate-acute, 2–7 centimetres (0.79–2.76 in) long and 1–3 centimetres (0.39–1.18 in) wide, with three conspicuous veins at the base, and a finely toothed margin. The flowers are small, 5 mm (0.20 in) wide, with five inconspicuous yellowish-green petals. The fruit is an edible oval drupe 1.5–3 centimetres (0.59–1.18 in) deep; when immature it is smooth-green, with the consistency and taste of an apple with lower acidity, maturing brown to purplish-black, and eventually wrinkled, looking like a small date. There is a single hard kernel, similar to an olive pit, containing two seeds. Distribution Its precise natural distribution is uncertain due to extensive cultivation, but is thought to be in southern Asia, between Lebanon, northern India, and southern and central China, and possibly also southeastern Europe though more likely introduced there.
