  • View from the van as number 7 leaves Excelsior. Once past the home signal for the opposite direction (it's the up home), because the departing train is now on the up approach track, the up home signal has correctly cleared to caution. Once the train exits the approach track circuit, the signal will return to stop. At the time of the photo, Excelsior was an unattended automatic crossing loop in electric staff working (an electrically operated single line token system). Being an automatic crossing loop simply meant that the main line through the location and for a few hundred metres each side was track circuited, and it was equipped with power operated home signals. When a train entered the approach track, provided the track through the location was clear, the home signal would automatically clear to "caution". If the track through the location or the approach track the other side was occupied, the home signal would remain at stop. The crossing loop points were worked by ground frame, unlocked by annett key obtained from electric releases near the home signals. When the release was taken, the home signals would be held at stop.

  • Train number 7, engine and van (referred to at the time as "horse and cart" - a light engine being "light horse") pauses at Excelsior platform, on the Mudgee line, in 1980. The train's number was unusually brief, just a single digit "7". It has stopped so that the observer ("fireman") can exchange staffs, that is "sink" the "peg" for the section just exited (Ben Bullen - Excelsior) in its instrument, and obtain the "peg" (i.e. the staff) for the next section (Excelsior - Clandulla). Van means brake van (aka guard's van), in this case a GHG class number GHG 30961. • The fireman of number 7 engine and van returns to the loco, having obtained the electric staff (token) for the next section of single line, in June 1980. One of the huts housed the electric staff instruments. The location was once a passenger station, hence the short platform. Number 7 ran to Kandos cement works as engine and van, where it would collect cement wagons which had been left there to load and return as number 8 Kandos to Lithgow cement train. Locos were branchliners 4912 and 4718.
