  • IHS looks like dollar sign if letters are superimposed. Iota, epsilon and sigma were first three letters of `Jesus' in Greek. `In hoc signo' was Latin for `in this sign you will conquer'. Today it means `Jesus Hominum Salvator' (Jesus Saviour of Men). members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/graves/symbols.htm The memorial is my Cam Reed, undertaker of Piper St, Bathurst. • Immortelle with lilies, flowers, dove and parting handshake. All immortelles seen were in relatively good condition and unbroken. Clasped hands - used as a sign of farewell, love and friendship not severed by death. members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/graves/symbols.htm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immortelle_(cemetery)

  • Sallys Flat was a small gold-mining village established in 1872 at the same time as nearby Hill End boomed during the New South Wales gold rush. It produced gold for many years but was not a large producer. It is now a farming area. In late 2015, Sallys Flat was one of six locations on an Australian Government shortlist for a nuclear waste repository. However the Government soon found the idea unpopular with locals and removed Sallys Flat from the list. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sallys_Flat,_New_South_Wales Yet another of the historic cemeteries on the Turon goldfields, this burial site has obviously been well maintained over the years. Even though showing the effects of a long drought when we visited it, we found it in excellent condition with all the stones upright, the grass cut and trimmed around all the graves, and the graves themselves clean and relatively free of weeds. Dates on the monuments covered the period from 1864 to the present. The tiny Catholic Church replaced an earlier wooden structure in the 1990s. austcemindex.com/cemetery.php?id=84

  • A descending dove with an olive branch in its beak, signifies peace and security - the dove returning to Noah's ark with an olive branch indicated that the land had reappeared after the flood; a sprig of passion fruit flowers - symbol of Christ's passion, sacrifice, suffering and redemption. members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/graves/symbols.htm "PIONEER'S PASSING Old Sally's Flat Identity SALLY'S FLAT, Wednesday. The death of Mrs. Mary Ann Ryan at her home, ''Tonanora,'' near Sally's Flat, to-day, removed one of the last remaining links with the early days of the district. Born at Cassilis 92 years ago, the late Mrs. Ryan came with her two brothers, Thomas and John Statham, to take up land at Sally's Flat. They persevered with the many problems which beset the early settlers and built up a station property which to-day is a credit to their memory. Both the brothers died several years ago. The late Mrs. Ryan is survived by a very large family, including three sons, Messrs. James, Matthew and Thomas Ryan (Sally's Flat), three daughters, Mrs. McEwen (Ryde), Misses Nora and Kat Ryan (Sally's Flat): seven grandchildren: Messrs. Jack, Edward, Frank, May Elsie Ry-an, Mrs. Jack Carew, all of Sydney, and Mrs. Les Seaman (Sofala). In addition there are six great-grand-children: James, Allan, Donald, Ernest, John and Irene McEwen. Her husband predeceased her by 39 years while there was another son, Matthew who died while only very young. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Thursday) to the Catholic potion of the Sally's Flat cemetery at 11.30 a.m. The deceased will be buried alongside her late husband and son."
