  • HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED: Market Day at White Rock (1900). As was anticipated would be the case, the market day and fancy fair at White Rook proved a great success. - Large numbers of holiday makers left Bathurst for the grounds, the coaches being kept busily plying until after the luncheon hour and many others attended the spot from which the coaches were announced to start at 2 o'olook, but were disappointed through the non-appearance of the vehicles, they having been chartered by private picnic parties. It is estimated that over 1000 visitors were on the ground, and they spread themselves out for enjoying the holiday to the full. The luncheon tables were largely patronised, and a brisk trade was done by the different stall holders during the afternoon, while good prices were obtained for the produce and stock at the auction conducted by Mr. J. Apps. The White Rock friends worked very hard, and were ably assisted by the Bathurst workers, foremost amongst whom was Mr. E. Williams, the secretary, and an enorgetic committee. The result must be gratifying to the promoters, and the Wesleynn Church funds to which the proceeds are to be devoted will benefit considerably from the venture, about £80 having been netted. (Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal Saturday 27 January 1900) White Rock NSW is 6km down a no through road. There looks to be no access to the Macquarie River (which is only 10 meters from the road.) The church is the only thing that looks anything like public infrastructure. DSCN1500

  • Climbing the hill between Kelso and O'Connell, some inspired person/s has/have planted some wattles along the roadside. Thought some of my contacts may be able to tell me? I'm thinking Acacia cardiophylla. "The name 'cardiophylla' refers to the heart shaped (= cordate) pinnules. A widely cultivated shrub with attractive foliage, adaptable to a variety of situations and soils." DSC06588
