  • The margins of Sugar Creek rainforest have many large trees of different species in the myrtle family. This was one of the tallest, around 60 metres in height. I didn't have a chance to get out the laser and measure the height. There were clouds of aggressive mosquitoes. And keeping still for more than a couple of seconds was unwise. Luckily, I escaped being bitten by any parasite in this rainforest.

  • Sugar Creek rainforest is dominated by cabbage tree palms. An old forestry brochure unkindly described this place as "low quality rainforest". Presumably for the lack of desirable timber species. The abundance of palms suggests plenty of moisture and a lack of drainage. Apart from the palms, there are quite a few rainforest tree species, the most common being the Coachwood (Ceratopetalum apetalum). Above the palms are tall non rainforest species in the Myrtaceae. Such as the Rose Gum, Turpentine and Brush Box. Some of the Eucalyptus grandis reach 60 metres in height. The Weeping Lilly Pilly is on the right side of the photo, with the dark grey trunk.
