  • The massive form of the Rose Gum is occasionally seen in sub tropical rainforest. The cylindrical, pearl coloured trunk contrasts with the darker shades of other rainforest trees. Next to the tree in this photo is the Brush Box, also a myrtle. Both species can grow to a large size. In this case the white tree is around 60 metres tall (Eucalyptus grandis). The brush box, around 35 metres. Tall trees like this white trunked eucalyptus are common in the north coast of New South Wales. Those growing from rainforests are often taller than one may suppose. When the canopy is broken by a fallen tree, and one can see the top of the tree. Then the laser usually returns a figure in excess of 60 metres. The Rose Gum, or Flooded gum is not generally considered a rainforest tree. However, in some circumstances it is a satisfactory description. The common name "rose gum" refers to the rose coloured timber. Within a kilometre from this place is another Eucalyptus grandis. It is much younger and thinner at the base. However, it is 70 metres tall. As a young tree, it may be expected to reach even greater heights in the next few decades.

It grows under 40 to 50 metre hoop pines. And a minutes walk away are Eucalyptus grandis trees, some are 70 metres tall.

  • Flooded gum (Eucalyptus grandis). Way Way forest, Mid north coast of New South Wales. The tallest of these trees was measured several times. The highest reading was 70 metres exactly. This reading was taken in the wind when the tree was leaning over. The top part of the tree is the second tuft of leaves. It's actually two metres higher than the apparently taller tuft on the left. Some of the thicker trees in the background may be taller than the measured tree, centre front of the photo. A plantation from 1941-42, the trees are remarkably thin. In twenty years, the trees may exceed 80 metres tall.
