  • Nineteen young Indigenous people have taken the first steps to securing long term careers in graduating from the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) Vocational Training and Employment Centre (VTEC) pre-employment training programme in Port Hedland. I attended the ceremony on behalf of the Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The VTEC model was pioneered by Fortescue chairman, Andrew Forrest. Getting Indigenous people into meaningful work is a key priority for the Australian Government, and the VTEC model does this by connecting Indigenous job seekers directly to employers and training the jobseeker to fill available roles.

  • On arriving at South Hedland WA, I had to drop into a hardware store to get a wrench so I could replace an ailing spark plug that'd been flaking out since Exmouth. When I returned to the bike, there were these two older guys circling Postie and excitedly pointing out various things-- the NSW plates, the homemade pannier brackets, the 'stubby holder' for the water, etc. Yep, these guys were riders! .. Harley Davidson riders at that! ... We had a chat about what I was up too-- and they mentioned that if I was to be servicing the bike, that I'd be very welcome to drop into their painting business across town, and get to work on the spark plugs in their shed in the shade, all the cold water and drinks I could want, and they'd love to chat about the ride more. (There was a shower, too!) Peter and Dennis had just 'upgraded' their Hogs to the latest 2013 110th Anniversary model (I'll edit in the exact model later too when I look through the journal I was keeping) and this Honda owner got the chance to get a good squiz at a Harley was well. :-)
