  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The abstract artwork depicting prolific international sculptor Henry Moore has been a striking if not unusual attraction in the small Central Western NSW town of Yeoval since 2010 when a tax deductible donation of one million dollars was made available by Sydney racing identity Robbie Waterhouse. The artwork was created by Croatian-born sculptor Drago Marin Cherina a protege of Henry Moore, one of the world's pre-eminent sculptors. Local Yeoval Banjo Paterson Museum curator Alf Cantrell orchestrated the acquisition of the sculpture back in 2010 after contacting various Sydney city councils in search of public artwork for the town of 250 people. The sculpture is located across the road from the Banjo Paterson Museum in Buckinbah Park where it shares a place with 'The Big Hat', a steel sculpture loaned to the town by Chris Gryllis, an Orange town Councillor. 'The Big Hat' was erected erected in Buckinbah Park in early 2017 with the assistance of the Cabonne Shire Council. Set among eucalypt trees the six metre bronze bust of sculptor Henry Moore looks a little out of place however Alf Cantrell believes the whole town has benefited from the extra tourist visitation now as grey nomads increasing alter course and add Yeoval to their travel routes. Reference Henry Spencer Moore OM CH FBA RBS (30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986) was an English sculptor and artist. He was best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures. Moore's works are usually suggestive of the female body, apart from a phase in the 1950s when he sculpted family groups. His forms are generally pierced or contain hollow spaces. Many interpreters liken the undulating form of his reclining figures to the landscape and hills of his birthplace, Yorkshire. Moore became well known through his carved marble and larger-scale abstract cast bronze sculptures, and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom. His ability in later life to fulfil large-scale commissions made him exceptionally wealthy. Despite this, he lived frugally; most of the money he earned went towards endowing the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and promotion of the arts. Reference - WIKIPEDIA

  • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images The Yeoval Catholic Church of Our Lady opened on 22nd June 1974 on land donated almost 70 years ago by Dr Michael Coolican. About 800 people from across the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst turned out for the official opening of the church by its then bishop. They marvelled at the 200-seat and double-brick church with a modern semi-circle design, a major step up from the remodelled ex-army building that had served as Yeoval's Catholic school and church for the previous 20 years. Following the completion of the church, about a year later, the Church of Our Lady was moved out of the Cumnock parish and into the Wellington parish and is presently under the watch of Father Tony Hennessy. The church was built by Walmac Constructions from Dubbo at a cost of $65,000 paid for by the people of Yeoval and district although at the end of the work a deficit of $4000 required a local fund raising drive which raised $7,500 which more than covered the buildings cost. • © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Early in 2017 the small central western NSW village of Yeoval, located on the the shortest route between Adelaide and Newcastle, became home to a new tourist attraction. 'The Big Hat' a sculpture of Banjo Paterson’s hat, had been used as real estate marketing tool by owner and Orange councillor Chris Gryllis since he had it made in 2014. When the idea of locating the Big Hat at Orange Botanic Gardens failed to gain traction Gryllis accepted an offer for 'The Big Hat' to be housed in Yeoval, where Banjo Paterson had lived for 7 years of his earlier life. With the help of Cabonne Council the steel sculpture was transported to Yeoval’s Banjo Paterson Museum where it will reside on loan across the road in the town's Buckinbah Park. Before the hat could be moved to Yeoval Gryllis had all the advertising paintwork pressure cleaned off and the hat repainted in readyness for its installation as as a pergola with seating in Buckinbah Park. There it joined other impressive sculptures, including the six-metre bronze bust of sculptor Henry Moore. 'The Big Hat' was officially opened on February 25 2017 during the Banjo Paterson Festival, which also featured a poets’ open microphone event. Central Western Daily

  • Yeoval, NSW, Australia. February 2017. I remain dazzled by the night sky that I have hardly ever seen beneath city lights. The half moon this night is very bright, and lights the foreground as if it were daylight. I was lucky to be able to capture the Milky Way. This photo is later in the later with moon setting and lighting the western side of the granary.

  • Yeoval, NSW, Australia. February 2017. The small town of Yeoval is about 45 min from the larger town of Parkes, which is about 5 hours from Sydney, in the mid west of NSW. The half moon was still incredibly bright and lights the granary beautifully, and the Milky Way still shows. I managed to avoid most of the town lights.

  • Yeoval, NSW, Australia. February 2017. From my series of photos of the granary at Yeoval under the Milky Way. The half moon is incredibly bright and brilliantly lighting the structure, but making the Milky Way challenging to capture.
