The Belfry of Kortrijk was built from 1307, when the King of France allowed the citizens of Kortrijk to have a bell in some place to use it for their business. Various arrangements occurred over the centuries. The halls beneath the tower had a commercial function. They were composed of several rooms where artisans, with the approval of the city, marketed their products. On the second floor was a vault (the Treasury Room) and the city's archives. The laws and regulations of the city were proclaimed from the balcony above the entrance door in front of the people invited to the gathering by the bell of the belfry and were called "Hallegeboden" (in French: Les Bans des Halles). The tower was used primarily as a guard tower to detect fires in the city. Ringing the bells had a special meaning, including: the opening and closing of city gates; a "working bell" which indicated the beginning and the end of the working time. It was forbidden to work with insufficient light; a bell announcing when it was no longer permitted to be in the street without a torch; festive bells. On the east side of the bell tower are the oldest citizens of the city: Manten and Kalle, the denunciators of the belfry. This system was already known in the Middle Ages for the ingenuity of the carillon. The original statue of Manten was removed in Dijon in France in 1382 (after the Battle of Westrozebeke), where it is still on the tower of the Notre-Dame church. Later, the new Manten in Kortrijk was joined by his wife Kalle and their children.
