  • Tongeren, Tongres is an ancient Roman settlement in the attractive landscape west of the river Meuse in Limburg, Belgium. City of Ambiorix. Nowadays it embraces its ancestry with many old cityscapes and buildings, a fine Gallo-Roman museum, but keeps also track with modern architectural developments. This is the Police station.

  • In the upper part of this very well preserved alms purse, we see a courtly scene of a knight on horseback in front of a castle, watched by a lady. The knight wears quite old fashioned armour for the time: a cervelliere over a coif, a longsleeved hauberk, mail chausses and a surcoat. The structure of the embroidery on the shins probably indicates greaves. By the 1330s plate armour was far more commonly worn. The old and incorrect dating of 1291 to 1310, as mentioned in the object label, comes from the Belgian Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage. The purse was certainly made later, probably around 1330-1340, based on stylistical grounds and the civilian clothes worn by the figures (e.g. the tippets at the cotehardie’s sleeves of the man on horseback below; do note his heart-shaped shield). A very interesting article on 14th century alms purses can be found here: cottesimple.com/articles/aumonieres/ Pictures taken at the exhibition "Limburg tussen staf en troon, 1000 jaar graafschap Loon" in Alden Biesen Castle, Bilzen, province of Limburg, Belgium (October 26th 2018 - March 10th 2019).
