White-faced Saki - Pithecia pithecia
White-faced Saki - Pithecia pithecia

  • Geographical coordinates of the taken: 3°4'41"S - 59°57'36"W
  • Family Pitheciidae - sakis This species is a bit of an enigma. They seem quite shy in good forest, but this group was in the neighbor's backyard. In forest the main vocalization is a cough-like alarm. This group was making a lot of contact calls, more like a band of bold Cebus. There were maybe 4-5 animals. All I saw well were dingy brown, presumably females or young males. The fruit is abiú (Pouteria caimito, Sapotaceae). These fruits were ripe (or almost ripe- they would be pure yellow when ripe) and juicy, which is also a bit of a difference from good forest, where sakis mostly eat unripe fruits. Presumably that capacity to eat unripe fruits gives them an edge over howlers, spiders, and Cebus (and puts them into competition with parrots). Thanks to Mario Cohn-Haft for the fruit id. www.inaturalist.org/observations/15223899 - iNat calls it Golden-faced Saki
