  • According to the earliest records, the area was settled by Celtic tribes. Later, around 100 BC, the Germanic tribe of the Semnones settled in that area. From around 600 onwards, West Slavic tribes known as the Milceni and Lusici settled permanently in the region. In the 10th century the region came under the influence of the Kingdom of Germany, starting with the 928 eastern campaigns of King Henry the Fowler. Until 963 the Lusatian tribes were subdued by the Saxon margrave Gero and upon his death two years later, the March of Lusatia was established on the territory of today's Lower Lusatia and remained with the Holy Roman Empire, while the adjacent Northern March again got lost in the Slavic uprising of 983. The later Upper Lusatian region of the Milceni lands up to the Silesian border at the Kwisa river at first was part of the Margraviate of Meissen under Margrave Eckard I. At the same time the Kingdom of Poland raised claims to the Lusatian lands and upon the death of Emperor Otto III in 1002, Margrave Gero II lost Lusatia to the Polish Duke Boleslaw I, who took the region in his conquests. After the 1018 Peace of Bautzen, Lusatia became part of his territory, however Germans and Poles continued struggling for administration of the region. It was regained in a 1031 campaign by Emperor Conrad II in favour of the Saxon German rulers of the Meissen House of Wettin and the Ascanian margraves of Brandenburg, who purchased the March of (Lower) Lusatia in 1303. In 1367 the Brandenburg elector Otto V of Wittelsbach finally sold Lower Lusatia to Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg, also King of Bohemia.

  • Autumn in poetry has often been associated with melancholy. The possibilities of summer are gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Skies turn grey, and many people turn inward, both physically and mentally. Similar examples may be found in Irish poet William Butler Yeats' poem The Wild Swans at Coole where the maturing season that the poet observes symbolically represents his own ageing self. Like the natural world that he observes he too has reached his prime and now must look forward to the inevitability of old age and death. French poet Paul Verlaine's "Chanson d'automne" ("Autumn Song") is likewise characterised by strong, painful feelings of sorrow. Keats' To Autumn, written in September 1819, echoes this sense of melancholic reflection, but also emphasises the lush abundance of the season. Follow me on FACEBOOK

  • Up to the present time woods cover more than one half of the area of the Lusatian Mountains. Until the intensive colonisation in the 13th and 14th century they were overgrown by the impervious bordering forest with prevailing beeches frequently accompanied by firs. After the 15th century the pristine woods were almost fully destroyed by the excessive development of glass-works. Later they gradually were substituted by spruce and pine monocultures. Remainders of the pristine beech forests are preserved only in separated small enclaves in secluded places and the hill tops. Today you may find here spruces and pines, and also beeches, maples, ashes, sometimes limes and elms, in some localities also oaks or alders, frequently growing along of brooks. In the eighties the woods were heavily damaged by industrial immissions. During the last years the atmospheric pollution decreased but, nevertheless, the woods are invariably endangered and only with difficulty resist the attacks of insect parasites and unfavourable atmospheric conditions. Their poor condition is clearly visible mainly in the hills surrounding the Jedlová hill.
