  • Beeindruckende Ausmaße hatte einst der Bahnhof Dorndorf an der Werra - das war in erster Linie der hier ansässigen Kaliindustrie geschuldet. Im August 1996 war das Werk allerdings schon dichtgemacht und der meiste Güterverkehr verschwunden. Auch die Strecke nach Kaltennordheim in der Thüringer Rhöhn, zu der 972 757 mit seinem Motorwagen als RB 14844 Ausfahrt erhalten hat, ist längst Geschichte.

  • The show mine Merkers is a show mine in the district of Merkers of the Krayenberggemeinde in the West-Thuringian Wartburg circle. The shafts Kaiseroda I (sinking belong to the former salt mine from 1895), II and III (both sinking from 1911). The mine belongs to the potash district Werra and has a railway network of about 4600 kilometres and today belongs to the K+S Kali GmbH. The biggest sinking amounts to about 860 metres, there rules a steady temperature of approx. 28 °C. The mine Merkers of the Wintershall AG started in 1925 as the world-biggest potash factory the operations. At the end of the Second World War 1945 large parts of the Reichsbank gold (among the rest, of the Nazi gold), cash were discovered in Reichsmark and many objects of art (among the rest, from the picture gallery (Berlin) and the bust of the Nofretete) on the 8th of April, 1945 by American troops. The U.S. generals Omar N. Bradley and George S. Patton drove in April, 1945 in the pit to examine the finding, after a little while also Dwight D. Eisenhower. Like all works of the potash industry in the area of the Soviet occupied zone the work Merkers was also expropriated in 1946 and first as a Soviet corporation (SAY) potash in Soviet property was transferred. In 1952 the potash works became to the GDR. In 1958 the union state-owned companies potash arose from it in Erfurt. In 1959 the foundation of the potash combine VEB Werra which became in 1970 a part of the combine potash occurred. Among the rest, in June, 1990 the "Kali-Werra AG" was founded from the combine and the combine was converted into the "Mitteldeutsche Kali AG". The Kali-Werra AG merged in 1993 with the "Kali und Salz GmbH" which put the mining into Merkers in favour of the mine Unterbreiz closed in the same year. Since end of the support, the shafts serve for protection works in the pit district Merkers and the mine since 1991 as a show mine.
