  • España - Almería - Carboneras - Castillo de San Andrés *** www.andalucia.org/en/cultural-tourism/visits/almeria/monu... ENGLISH Construction of San Andrés Castle next to the beach, as a coastal defence, gave rise to the town of Carboneras. Today it is the area's most famous landmark and stands in the heart of the old town centre. The most notable feature on the façade, a semicircular arch, is the coat of arms of the Marqueses of Carpio, who ordered the castle built in the late 16th century to defend the coast after the Moorish uprising. Construction was completed in 1621. In the 19th century, it became part of the House of Alba. The building has a rectangular floor with semicircular towers on three of its corners. Inside, the castle is arranged around a parade ground.
