  • Glenda Browne reads Georges Brinkman's report of the death of Felicia Browne as she went to help a wounded comrade. The reading took place by the River Sotón near the small town of Gurrea de Gállego. After the reading Glenda threw flowers into the river. The reading took place just a few hundred yards from the railway bridge where the unit of which she was a part had successfully detonated explosives to render it useless to the Nationalist trains. The unit was attacked on it's return journey to its base. Felicia Browne was an artist studying in England and Germany (where she witnessed the rise of the Nazi party) and a member of the Communist party. She travelled to Spain with the intention of sketching and recording her trip. With the outbreak of the Civil War, after several attempts, she was permitted to join the PSUC (Catalan communists) militia at the Carlos Marx barracks and joined a battalion in Tardienta. A few days later she volunteered to go on a night mission to blow up the train bridge near Gurrea de Gállego, that carried vital supplies from Zaragoza to Huesca - both strongholds of the insurgent forces of the right. It was on their return they were confronted by an enemy patrol and she and an Italian comrade, Paolo Comida, were killed - probably on the 22nd of August 1936 - the first British fatality. After her death her portrait was carried in a huge march in September celebrating the "long march to freedom" (the radical tradition) in British History. The march went through Hyde Park and at the sight of the banner it brought the cheering crowds to respectful silence. An exhibition of her drawings was held in London in October 1936.

  • Glenda Browne throwing flowers into the River Sotón near Gurrea de Gállego where Felicia Browne was killed in August 1936. "As we watched the wild flowers we had plucked, borne away on the beautiful grey-green waters, we remembered her death also." Glenda read, movingly, of Felicia’s life including this letter written by one of Felicia's unit - a German volunteer, Georges Brinkman. "..., we, ten comrades under the command of Captain Lanti, left our quarters to blow up a Fascist munition train. All ten comrades were volunteers who had enlisted in the militia, among them was comrade Felicia Browne. Comrade Felicia had been in Tardienta three days when we happened to speak about our work. When I told her that I was in the Storm Troop and that there were only volunteers in it, she said that she would like to go with us. I asked the Captain whether he would accept a woman comrade in that troop. I received the answer ‘If she wants to, she can come with us.’ Comrade Felicia declared herself ready to go with us, after I had explained to her the dangers involved in the task. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon of the 22nd August we left Tardienta by car, and drove to the farthest point of our front. From there we had still 11 to 12 kilos to cover on foot before we came to a position and had reached the railway line. Then we left Comrade Felicia and two other comrades behind to keep a look-out and give us due warning. Then when everything was ready we had taken up our position at a distance of 50 metres from the railway line, we had ½ a minute to wait for the Fascist munition train to pass. On starting back we came upon Comrade Gabriel who had crashed in his plane. We covered what was left of his body with my shirt and continued on the way back. A moment later we saw a dog appear about 5 metres away. The Captain detailed me immediately to see what was up. I ran quickly up a very steep incline from which I saw approximately 15 metres away a group of about 35-40 Fascists. Then I signed to my comrades to get into position, while I myself followed them under heavy rifle fire, without being hit. An Italian comrade [Paolo Comida] however was hit in the foot, and was lying a few metres from me. When I had got him lying on his stomach behind a rise in the ground of ½ metre, and all the other comrades were in position, I took up my position and informed the other comrades. Felicia wanted to bring First Aid to the wounded comrade. When she reached him, the Fascists directed their united fire against the two of them. With several wounds in the breast and one in the back, Felicia, our brave fighter in the cause of Freedom, sank dead to the ground. The other comrade also lost his life. As it was now too late to take the comrades with us, and also as there were not many of us, we took their personal things and handed them to the Military Committee. So fell Felicia Browne in the fight against Fascism, believing in the liberation of the international working class. I who was present write this for an English comrade to our international comrades in everlasting memory of Felicia Browne. Georges Brinkman, Barcelona, 30th August 1936 An IBMT tour of Aragon. 16th October - 22nd October 2014.
