  • El Villar Dam, El Villar Reservoir is located in the lower Lozoya River, in the Sierra de Guadarrama (Community of Madrid). It is the oldest in operation in the entire region and the entire reservoir system of the Canal de Isabel II, a network that supplies drinking water to the capital of Spain and a large part of the Community of Madrid. After the inauguration of the Ponto de la Oliva, which never worked at full capacity due to water leaks, the Canal de Isabel II ordered a new dam upstream, about 50 meters below an old bridge called El Villar (which owes its name to a disappeared village). The work began in 1869 and was designed and directed by engineers Elzeario Boix and José Morer.1 As in the Pontón de la Oliva, a closed gorge was chosen to locate the dam. Boix, a great admirer of the hydraulic infrastructures that were then built in other European countries, designed an original gravity dam with a curved plan that was a boast of technology, since it was the first of this style built around the world. It is its characteristic curvature that helps the structure of the dam to better withstand lateral pressures. It was completed and inaugurated in 1873 as the highest dam in Spain, although it has already been surpassed. Throughout more than a century it has been subjected to various reforms and currently continues to provide service. In 1911 the El Villar channel, then called the Transversal channel, was put into service, through which water could be supplied to Madrid, taken directly of the reservoir. In its margins, between 1916 and 1934, various perimeter channels were built to improve the quality of the water that could be supplied from this reservoir.
