A legend of storks In ancient Egypt, the stork was sacred and anyone who attacked it was punished with death. In Greece, formerly, the "stork law" was called the edict that forced children to feed their distressed old parents. Today, in the East and in Alsace, this traditional respect and veneration still survive. Legends tell that the stork is above all a good luck charm. When a young girl sees a stork on land take a few steps to meet her, it is said to be a sign of marriage within the year. A very old feudal legend of the Lower Rhine tells that the storks embodied the survival of the dead and had the mission to go to the bottom of the well for the soul destined for the baby who was to come to earth. Nowadays, it’s the stork that brings the babies.... For example, children are told that to have a little brother or sister, you have to put a sugar on the edge of the window. (Like Jean de La Fontaine’s raven, the stork drops its package when she grabs the candy). In Alsace, it is said that if a stork flies up and down on a young woman, she will be expecting a baby within the year! ©TOUS DROITS RÉSERVÉS ©ALL RIGHT RESERVED www.flickriver.com/photos/philippe_haumesser/popular-inte...> www.facebook.com/philippe.haumesser.9</a</a</a</a
