  • Following on from yeaterdays post - Here's a very rare view of a peat wagon load in the process of being lifted to the roof to be emptied in to the furnaces below in the power station. The keen eyed will notice that the wagon was lifted off it's boogie's and one of the little Ruston locomotives top left that typically hauled the consist in from the bogs for Bord Na Mona. The Power station was closed mid 90's and completely demolished a few years later. March 1991 H Nikkormat - Kodak Ektachrome - 100 ASA - 28 mm Nikkor

  • With Peat fired electricity about to come to a end in the Irish midlands, here's a look back to ESB Allenwood in March 1991 before closure. The station had a year or so left of operation, here one of the station's employee is about to detach one of four chains of a empty peat hopper wagon that the crane (boom top left) has lowered back down after raising it up to the power station roof to tip it's contents in the furnaces below in the station. The little Bord Na Mona trains came in from the surround bogs loaded with peat on a merry go round principle, although each hopper was attached and emptied by crane up on the roof and then the train slowly moved on to the next carriage to the to be emptied. The operation here needed four men on the ground to attached and release the chains as the train slowly moved through till it was emptied. The power station has since been completely demolished. Here's a shot of the carriage been emptied on the roof www.flickr.com/photos/2cme/6949847348/in/album-7215762276... • With the ESB powerstations at Lanesborough & Shannonbridge set for imminent closure, Time to look back at another one we lost, ESB Allenwood. A Permanent way gondola lies in a siding at the back of the powerstation, a network of narrow gauge railways brought the peat from the surrounding bogs to fuel this steam fired powerstation. ESB Allenwood closed in the early 90's and was demolished and the site cleared few years later. • This is a photograph from the Coill Dubh Fit-4-Life 5KM Fun Run which took place in Coill Dubh, Prosperous, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 25th June 2017 at 11:00. The race started and finished at Coill Dubh Community center. The course as reasonably fast and flat and took in the well known 'main' road between Allenwood and Properous passing by Dagwells' Cross. About 170 runners, joggers and walkers took part in the event. The race was timed and event managed by PopupRaces. The weather was reasonably good for running - a warm summer's morning with some cloud cover but little or no wind. Refreshments and prize giving were held in the Coill Dubh community center. For those who do not know Coill Dubh is a small village community situated about 5 miles from Clane and 10 miles from Naas Co. Kildare. The history of the village is very much shaped by its historic relationship with Bord na Mona where many of the residents of the village were employed by the company to supply peat to the local peat fired power station at Allenwood.
