  • The English word "whiskey" comes from the Irish "uisce beatha," meaning "water of life." This Irish-language manhole cover is referring literally to the water in the local water main.

  • Ardee's Great Northern branch diverged to the town from Dromin Jct on the Dublin -Belfast mainline four miles distant. The Branch lost it’s passenger service in 1948, it’s good's service lasting longer until 1975, which by then the branch had been in CIE ownership since 1958 after the demise of the Great Northern that year. Kodak T-max, 35mm, Nikkormat SLR. 1996.

  • To call it a "jumping" church implies some kind of continual action. To the best of my knowledge, this sucker hasn't moved since 1715. And I have my suspicions about how jumpy this thing is. I suspect that the same kind of thinking that brought the Barack Obama Plaza to Moneygall in the 21st century could have brought a jumping church to Kildemock in the 18th century.

  • On the way between places we swung by the Jumping Church of Kildemock. The wee harp at the bottom of the sign really makes it for me. That and the tone of "I can't believe I had to make this sign in two languages for a load of superstitious bullshit". Text below: Is léir ar an bhfalla seo gur aigbrigh sé tuairim 3 troithe isteach óna bhonn. Tá trácht i gcúntas i 1715 ar stoirm mhór sh bhliain sin d'ardaigh an falla as a ionad, ach do reir seanchais na ndaoine is anhlaidh a léim an falla insteach thar uaigh dhuine a cuireadh faoi choinneallbhádh. This wall by its pitch, tilt, and position, can be seen to have moved some three feet from its foundation. Contemporary accounts mention a severe storm in 1715 when [the] wall lifted and [was] deposited as it now stands, but local tradition states that the wall jumped inwards to exclude the grave of an excommunicated person.
