  • The border between Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and Co. Leitrim, Republic of Ireland along the northern shore of Lough Melvin. This is very close to the western edge of N. Ireland. Behind me on the roadside is a memorial to a local man who died on the road in February 1994 'as a result of British Army excavations' - he drowned after falling into a water-filled crater which at that stage blocked the road. There is another memorial to two men who died in similar circumstances further south along the border, between Kiltyclogher and Scribbagh. All five roads along the Fermanagh / Leitrim border were closed by the British at the height of the Troubles in the 1970s and only reopened in the mid 1990s.

  • Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Lough Melvin is located in the northwest of Ireland in the counties of Leitrim and (to a lesser extent) Fermanagh, hence stradding the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland. The lough has a surface area of 20 square kilometres and is famous for its early run of Atlantic salmon (it is connected to the ocean by the River Drowes which flows from the lough to the ocean west of Bundoran in Co. Donegal). Arctic Char, otter and three species of trout (sonaghan, gillaroo, ferox) are among the many species that live in or around the lough. Within its catchment, the endangered globeflower, Molinia meadows and sessile oak woodlands can be found. Charlie Chaplin is said to have fished Lough Melvin extensively, while staying in Garrison, Co. Fermanagh. This public jetty is literally right on the border, with a small stream joining the lough a short distance to my left forming the boundary with Co. Fermanagh.
