  • The ruins of a castle in the village of Aughrim. This was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in Irish history - the Battle of Aughrim, on 12th July 1691. Following the Battle of the Boyne, the Jacoites retreated beyond the river Shannon and held out for over a year. The Battle of Aughrim (or as it seems to be pronounced in 'The Sash' - 'It was worn at Derry, Augh-er-im, Enniskillen and the Boyne') was the decisive battle, although the final action of the Williamite Wars in Ireland was the Siege of Limerick several months later.
