  • It has been a while since we visited Mr. O'Dea's collection and this shot, titled: "Ballaghdereen train & crew, Kilfree Junction, Co. Sligo." with the cabin crew standing on the deck of old 655 was taken at Kilfree in Co. Sligo. I wonder if we can identify any of the two men in the image! People Identified Klaxon (blown with gusto) Thanks to Eiretrains on Flickr and BealachanDoirín on Twitter we can confirm that pictured are driver Michael (Mick) Murray (left) and fireman Paddy Cassidy (right). O'Dea has a rather sad reference to Mick as follows: "Shortly before the line closed, Driver Mick Murray, walking in to Ballaghaderreen from Edmondstown where he lived, in the darkness of the winter morning, collapsed and died in the snow by the side of the line. His body was found when the train returned from Kilfree after daylight by the fireman Jimmy O’Grady who took the train out at 8 a.m.,and by Christy Plunkett the guard, who fired for him that morning." • Looking very sorry for itself and it’s days almost numbered, amazingly this once charming branch terminus still hangs in today. I was minded to post this when I saw John Philips & Ernie Brack charming shots from the last years of the station. The station opened for business on the 1st of November 1874 as part of the 9.5 mile branch to the Sligo mainline at Kilfree Junction. predominately the branch’s business was of the agriculture nature, with two intermediate stations at Edmonstown and Island road. The branch lasted for 89 years, closure coming entirely on the 2nd of Feb 1963. Unsually the station never had a signal box, the block instruments were housed in the station building. Here’s John’s and Ernie’s shots. flic.kr/p/rqDqfy www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/6898446044/in/album... and it’s present state, After all, this being Irish Industrial Heritage week.... goo.gl/maps/7WkPo

  • A couple of standing stones with arrow etchings lie on opposing sides of Cathedral Street in Ballaghaderreen, their form a reminder of the country's imperialistic past. Neither are likely to be in their original position but rather may have been moved from other locations as the town was developed. Similar stones once littered the country and acted as markers for a countrywide survey undertaken by the British Board of Ordinance between 1825 and 1846. This survey, completed under the direction of Major General Colby was the most comprehensive survey of any country at that time - the map detail being in the almost unheard of scale of 6 inches to 1 mile. In the later years of the scheme welcome employment was provided to Irish labourers who were hired as fieldwork labourers at a time when the shroud of the Great Famine enveloped the country.
