  • Here is a great example of a what is called a díseart in Irish. Saint Hugh's well and sweathouse is a beautifully verdant retreat. Pilgrims would come here to drink from the pure waters of the well and to purge their fevers in the sweathouse. There are some old megaliths here which indicate that the site may have been sacred long before Saint Hugh moved in. The sweathouse was a small solid oven of a building with one door and no windows. It would be heated with a turf fire and the pilgrims could sit in the hot steam to cure themselves. The Gaels had saunas a long time before the gym got one
