  • Another one from the archives. This was shot in May this year. Because Ireland is quite far north, it doesn't get fully dark for much of the summer. When you see Leo low into the dusk sky, you know that dark nights are almost over for the summer. I used Topaz Star Effects to highlight the stars that make up the main pattern of Leo.

  • A dramatic sunset near Butlersbridge in Co. Cavan. We see the sun setting behind a hill behind the embankment for the new N3 Cavan By-Pass. When I was a kid growing up here the new bypass did not exist, and there was a clear view up the valley from here.

  • A view of all the remains of a former railway crossing near Butlersbridge in Co. Cavan. At this point locals could cross the Great Northern Railway of Ireland's line between Cavan town and Clones (optionally with their live stock). The most obvious remains are the two styles to allow pedestrians to cross the fence that ran along each side of the line without having to open any gates. Next to the styles in varying degrees of decay are the remains of the gates that allowed livestock to cross the line. Almost invisible, both in the shot an in reality, are the small culverts allowing the people and the cows to cross the pair of ditches that flanked the line on each side - this is mostly because the ditches have almost completely silted up.

  • These two styles located on either side of the trackbed of the former Great Northern Railway of Ireland's line from Cavan town to Clones, and allowed pedestrians to cross the line. When I was a kid they were still strong enough to play on, but they are very rotten now, and in a few more years I think they'll be gone completely. Nature is making great progress reclaiming Cavan's railway heritage.

  • Some closeup shots of the top of one of the very few Great Northern Railway of Ireland telegraph poles still standing along the GNR(I)'s former line between Cavan and Clones. These poles literally ran the entire length of the line, but almost all have been cut down for firewood by locals.

  • A view up the former trackbed of the Great Northern Railway of Ireland's line between Cavan and Clones looking north from where the old N3 (not the new N3 Cavan Bypass) crosses the former line. In the distance you can see the bridge across the Butlersbridge to Ballyhaise road. A train hasn't run here since 1959, and given the fact that the trackbed has been blocked in many places, there's unlikely ever to be one seen here again.

  • Nature has almost completely re-claimed this section of the Great Northern Railway of Ireland's line between Cavan town and Clones. You can see that the old trackbed has been blocked by the massive embankment for the new N3 Cavan bypass. This line is exceptionally unlikely ever to be resurrected, because this is just one of many obstacles on the line. This shot was taken from a former level crossing on a small road near Butlersbridge looking north towards Clones.

  • If you're in the northern half of Ireland and you see a beautiful art-deco looking gate like this one, you can be quite sure you've standing very close to a former Great Northern Railway of Ireland line or branch line. In the case of this gate near Butlersbridge in Co. Cavan, it's a few hundred yards from the old GNR(I) line between Cavan town and Clones on the Cavan Monaghan border.
