  • HSS! My 100th photo taken specifically for the 100 Flowers 2018 group. It was my choice to only photograph wild flowers rather than include cultivated ones as in previous years & I'm glad I did. Thanks Harriet hcorper for running the group. This is a very attractive wildflower which is commonly found in dry grassy places throughout the country, blooming from July to late September. It is a tall perennial which has pretty, flattish heads of blue-lilac flowers (30-40mm) which are borne on branched, wiry, purple-spotted stems. The outer flowers are larger than the inner ones and the stamens add to the beauty of the plant by standing upright, making the flower look like a blue pin-cushion. This is a native plant belonging to the family Dipsacaceae. Can I thank each & every one of my wonderful Flickr friends for your support throughout the past 12 months. I really do appreciate all your comments & words of encouragement. Happy New Year everyone & all the best for 2019!

  • Photo taken back in the summer during our drought. Photo 90/100 for the 100 Flowers 2018 Group. This year I'm taking 100 photos of different wild flowers in the Irish countryside. "This is an evergreen, succulent, mat-forming perennial plant which grows happily on old walls and on stony ground, never reaching much above 15 cm high. It has flat-topped heads of little star-shaped white flowers (6–9 mm across) which bloom from June to September. The leaves are shiny and green, sometimes with a tinge of red This is not a native plant but considered to be a garden escape – often planted in rock gardens - and it belongs to the Crassulaceae family"

  • These Rock Samphire flowers were covered in ants. I'm presuming they give out some sort of sap or nectar that the ants love? HTT! "On sea cliffs & shingle beaches, this grey-green, hairless perennial wildflower grows to a height of 40cm only. This plant has evolved to withstand the elements found in its coastal habitat. The fleshy stems carry wide umbels of yellow-green flowers from June to September, The fleshy leaves are extremely narrow to tolerate harsh sea-winds. This is a native plant & it belongs to the family Apiaceae The name 'Samphire' comes from the French name for the plant, 'Herbe de Saint Pierre' & the Italian 'Herba di San Pietra' as the plant was dedicated to that Biblical fisherman. In times past, Samphire was cooked in vinegar and made into a pickle. In the sixteenth century, herbalish John Gerard wrote: 'The leaves kept in pickle and eaten in sallads with oile and vinegar is a pleasant sauce for meat, wholesome for the stoppings of the liver, milt and kidnies. It is the pleasantest sauce, most familiar and best agreeing with man's body" Photo 83/100 for the 100 Flowers 2018 Group. This year I'm taking 100 photos of different wild flowers in the Irish countryside.

  • Always a joy to see clumps of Thrift also known as Sea Pinks. This cushion-forming perennial carpets cliffs, coastal roadsides & salt marshes from April to July with dense tufts of papery, pink flowers & grass-like grey-green leaves. This is the view down to the beach from the cliff at Carnarvon Bay, Co. Wexford. The yellow flowers are Kidney Vetch. I'll upload a separate photo of these another time.
