  • The evening sun hits the memorial statue of Irish patriot Séan Mac Diarmada / Séan MacDermott, which stands in the centre of the small village of Kiltyclogher, in north County Leitrim on the border with County Fermanagh. Mac Diarmada was born a few miles outside the village in 1883, and the modest family cottage has been preserved as a National Monument. He had a long involvement in Irish republican and cultural organisations, culminating with a key role in planning the Easter Rising of 1916. He was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of Independence and during the fighting was stationed at the headquarters in the General Post Office. Following the surrender and a court martial on 9 May, he was executed by a British firing squad on 12 May at the age of 33. Before his execution, Mac Diarmada wrote, "I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!” In addition to this memorial, he gives his name to Seán MacDermott Street in Dublin, Mac Diarmada railway station in Sligo, and Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, the GAA stadium in Co. Leitrim's main town, Carrick-on-Shannon.

  • A bridge marking the boundary between Counties Leitrim (left) and Fermanagh (right), to the north of the village of Kiltyclogher. It also marks the boundary between the Republic and Northern Ireland. Two small rivers meet at this point; the Sraduffy River can be seen coming in from the left, while I'm unsure what the river is directly under the bridge - possibly the Black or Lattone River. The merged river leading off to the right is called the County River and, as the name suggests, forms the boundary between the two counties until it empties into Lough Melvin several miles to the north west.

  • A shot I took on a lovely May evening this year on a quiet road on the Fermanagh/Leitrim border. The bridge (located at the meeting point of two small rivers) marks the boundary between the two counties, and between Ulster and Connacht, and Northern Ireland and the Republic; this is looking in the direction of the village of Kiltyclogher, with Thur Mountain (west of Lough Macnean) visible on the right.

  • The border between Counties Fermanagh and Leitrim, and Northern Ireland and the Republic, at a bridge over the small County River just a couple of hundred metres north of the village of Kiltyclogher. This minor road (more of a forest track really, and not marked on the Flickr/Yahoo map) as well as all the other roads between the two counties would have been closed by the British Army during the Troubles, requiring lengthy detours between either Belcoo/Blacklion or Belleek.
