  • Photo showing a group of US Marines on the quay at Lisahally prior to boarding a landing craft during a training exercise. The landing craft in the photo is an LCV (Landing Craft Vehicle) type capable of carrying either 36 troops, a Jeep sized vehicle, or 10,000 lb of cargo. Constructed with a wooden hull, the craft measured 36' 4" long and had a top speed of 9 knots. Although more adaptable than the earlier LCP (Landing Craft Personnel) the craft were themselves superseeded by the largely similar LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel). One of the major differences was the prominent exposed standing position for the helmsman on the LCV was removed and steering functions repositioned to something akin to an open cockpit in the hull, affording slighty more protection under fire. Only 2366 LCV were built as opposed to 23,358 LCVP. Note the railway line and USNOB storage warehouses in the background.

  • Warehouse buildings numbers 2-6 at the USNOB Lisahally, situated adjacent to the railway line. Measuring 40' x 100' each, there were 29 of these buildings within the Lisahally site. Seven contained refrigeration units for cold storage, while the rest contained a wide variety of dry provisions.

  • Dry goods being loaded onto a flatbed truck from a warehouse building on the south east corner of the USNOB Lisahally Supply Base. Visible to the right is the former Coolkeeragh House. At the time of the base opening the house was vacant, and it was envisaged that the Navy would eventually use it as a recreation center for enlisted men at the Lisahally camp. It is unclear if this actually took place, but like so many other large country houses in Northern Ireland it was eventually demolished after the war, and no trace remains.

  • View along the former United States Navy quay at Lisahally looking toward Culmore Point on the far side of the River Foyle. A solitary US Marine can be seen patrolling the quay which is completely devoid of any naval vessels. As the point where fuel and supplies were taken onboard, and final preparations made ahead of sailing for open water, ships would typically have spent as little time as possible at Lisahally before proeeding to their operations. Possibly due to this photographs of naval vessels at Lisahally are relatively rare

  • Railway crossing between the stores buildings and the quay at Lisahally. The railway passed right through the site giving an excellent view of the facility which also resulted in some security concerns. At least one case is documented of the film from a camera being confiscated after one individual was seen taking a photograph of ships berthed from a train.
