  • I took this photo next to last nights photo, I’m not 100% happy with this photo but I know the location has potential for a great photo so I’ll have to try more photos, not necessarily for the 366 project. It’s strange I use to pass that building a lot in previous jobs not knowing anything about the company, now in my current role we have to deal with them quite a bit, BOC provide gas and various safety equipment for food production / bars etc.

  • With the winter nights I’m pretty restricted to either night time photos, interior lighting practice or waking up really early for sunrise photos.. I don’t fancy doing the early ones just yet!

  • My first week of the 366 project was primarily with my phone and after taking a photo yesterday of myself both with the camera and some lighting that I’d try stock with that theme for a bit, get some practice in, so I roped Sam into getting on front of the camera for me.

  • Shorebirds of Ireland, Freshwater Birds of Ireland and The Birds of Ireland: A Field Guide with Jim Wilson. www.markcarmodyphotography.com The Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, also known as Eurasian Kingfisher or River Kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter. This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptions to enable it to see prey under water. There are seven subspecies differing in the hue of the upperparts and the intensity of the rufous colour of the underparts; size varies across the subspecies by up to 10%. Only a quarter of the young survive to breed the following year, but this is enough to maintain the population. Likewise, only a quarter of adult birds survive from one breeding season to the next. Very few birds live longer than one breeding season. This is in part due to cold winters, predators such as rats and mink, and fledged young drowning during their first forays as the king of fishers. (wikipedia) A stunning bird which I always enjoy seeing. This female (lower mandible is orange) has set up a winter territory along a small stretch of the River Dodder near Dublin city.

  • Today I decided to practice with some slow shutter shots, a couple years back I took a photo I loved using a slow shutter and torch to give a smoke effect, I can’t remember how I did and was trying to recreate and couldn’t so I just took a basic photo. This was a rush job in the house, I’ll need to get some backdrops and other equipment for future photos, along with plenty of practice!

  • Shorebirds of Ireland, Freshwater Birds of Ireland and The Birds of Ireland: A Field Guide with Jim Wilson. www.markcarmodyphotography.com The Long-tailed Tit, Aegithalos caudatus, is a very small passerine bird. It breeds in most of Europe and Asia. It is usually a non-migratory species, although there have been several extralimital records, and migration has been observed in north-eastern Europe. The Long-tailed Tit is black and brown above and whitish below, with reddish flanks. It has a white crown. North European birds (A. c. caudatus) have completely white heads and flanks. There are several other subspecies which vary substantially in plumage (such as European birds have got black above eye and Turkish birds has got greyish "eyebrow" above eye and black thoat with grey scapulars). Hybridization between subspecies is common, and the hybridization zone between caudatus and europaeus seems to move in an easterly direction. Long-tailed Tits are found in deciduous woodlands with significant undergrowth. This is a restless species, constantly on the move as it searches for insects and other small food items. During the autumn and winter, it is usually found in flocks of up to thirty individuals; it has been described as an avian sheep. During the breeding season (late February to July), Long-tailed Tits form monogamous pairs. (wikipedia) These are always quite vocal and their presence is usually given away by their constant contact calls. Such a busy bird, always flitting through trees and the hedgerows but always a treat to see.

  • I returned to work after the Christmas break today and had every intention of taking a photograph in work to highlight it but completely forgot. Instead I took this photo on my way home from work today, this is my first time walking home from work since moving to Walkinstown, fingers crossed by the end of the year I’ll be running the commute.
