  • An interesting ratchet-tensioning end-post for a wire fence, a rare survivor these days! The ratchet mechanism is clearly visible that would have tensioned each wire of the fence. A contraption like this could easily have been made by a local blacksmith. Newpass House is a large Palladian style country house built around the 1780’s. The house fabric survives largely unaltered, retaining its original form and internal features too. Today, it is a private residence. The original Newpass House was built for the Whitney family during the 17th century and was replaced in the late 18th century by the present building complete with substantial outhouses to the rear. The Featherston-Haughs lived here during the 19th century and who were major landowners across Westmeath at the time. www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&amp...
