  • Accettura is "the" symbol country of "arboreal marriages" celebrated in Basilicata, ancestral and propitiatory rites in which the trunk and the top, the "groom" and the "bride", are grafted and raised to heaven in a union symbolic. The spotlight on the Maggio Festival of Accettura is lit on Pentecost Sunday, when the bride and groom begin their journey towards the town square, but the entire event is repeated every year from the Easter Octave to the Sunday of Corpus Domini and is dedicated to the Patron Saint, San Giuliano. The choice of the two plants that "convolve" to the wedding takes place respectively in the first and second Sunday after Easter. He, the groom, the Maggio, is a large oak tree that comes from the Montepiano forest, demolished on Ascension Day. She, the bride, the Cima, is a holly plant from the Gallipoli Cognato forest. As in the most traditional of marriages, before joining, in Largo San Vito, the future "spouses" proceed separately accompanied by the respective ranks of "maggiaioli" and "cimaioli" The two parades proceed slowly to the rhythm of music, songs, popular dances, with breaks dedicated to moments of refreshment based on good wine and typical products. The transport of the Maggio and Cima represents a moment of extraordinary theatricality, between shouts of incitement and performances of physical strength. Once you reach the amphitheater, in Largo San Vito, the wedding ceremony is completed: the Cima is grafted on May and together they are raised. Meanwhile, the procession of the Patron, San Giuliano, flows.

  • The origins of Accettura seem to date back to the period of Magna Graecia, when the town was referred to by the Latin name of "Acceptura", which could refer both to the meaning of "sparviero", as to the symbol of the country, two golden axes, from here " accepta-aurea "," Acceptura ", therefore Accettura. The municipality would have arisen in an inhabited territory starting from the VI-IV century BC, while it is mentioned for the first time in an Episcopal Bull of 1060. In what is the current inhabited center, populations of rural villages scattered in the surrounding area - Gallipoli, Cortaglia and Costa la Raja and a fortified center in the Croccia-Cognato area -. The remains of a square-shaped fortification surrounded by villages are still visible today. Later destroyed by a fire, in 1272, Charles of Anjou has the reconstruction, and then become property of the Bozzano family. Over time it has also belonged to the Bazzano, della Marra, Ponsiaco, Carafa, Colonna and Spinelli families, until it reaches the subversion of feudalism. Accettura will be "touched" also by the phenomenon of the Brigantaggio. On 12 November, after having taken the nearby Cirigliano, in fact, the bands of the brigand Lucan Carmine Crocco and of José Borjès, advance towards Gorgoglione, who does not resist. In Accettura, General Borjès had his troops camped and then proceeded to Garaguso, as he was informed of the presence of militia units nearby

  • Perhaps the oldest festival in Italy takes place in Accettura. It is so old it predates the classical era by at least a 1000 years. Its origins go back to the dawn of human consciousness and derive from the belief that trees are living beings and are, therefore, able to come together in the act of love. This coupling guarantees a fruitful harvest at the end of the growing season. And so it is with this annual festival taking place in the last week of May. The male is called the 'maggio', a tall oak selected and chopped down from the nearby woods. The female is the 'cima' or top of a holly tree cut in such a way as to leave an abundance of branches. A bush, if we may say so. The two are carried about the town with lively enthusiasm until they are ceremoniously united.

  • Today seat of the Natural Park of Gallipoli Cognato, Accettura is a town in the province of Matera, whose origins date back to Ancient Greece, testified by the discovery of votive ceramics of the IV-III century B.C. and exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria. The name derives from "acceptor" (hawk). The first settlement in the Middle Ages arose in an area known as Raya, probably founded by citizens from Gallipoli, of which today are still visible the ruins of a square shaped fortress.

  • It is not uncommon, walking through the alleys of Accettura, to be attracted by the scents of local cuisine. The gastronomic tradition of the country of the province of Matera refers to the ancient rural tradition in which the different types of handmade pasta predominate, often seasoned with legumes or excellent sauce, but also grilled meat, cured meats accompanied by tasty cheeses and mushrooms collected in the near Montepiano forest. The appetizing vegetables in oil such as peppers and aubergines are also widespread, as are the "cruschi" peppers, typical of the region, or the rafanata, a type of omelette made mostly of horseradish

  • Accettura preserves a characteristic historic center where, on the occasion of the Festa del Maggio, to which the Museum of tree cults is dedicated, there is a unique atmosphere. Small but charming, the village of Accettura is very characteristic for its narrow streets through which you can reach noble palaces, ancient stone portals, dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and churches, architecture concentrated mainly in the ancient district "Scarrone" ". Walking along the ancient village you find yourself then at the Amphitheater, where the raising of the Maggio takes place, and in the so-called piazzetta of the "meeting", where the May and the Cima meet, during the celebration of the well-known arboreal rite that coincides with the celebrations in honor of San Giuliano Martire. The museum is located in the territory of the Parco di Gallipoli Cognato, where all the documents relating to some of the "tree marriages" widespread in the region are dedicated to the arboreal cults. The exhibition hosts an exhibition of paintings, photographic collections and videos of the May festivities, texts and information related to anthropological and social rites and ancient traditions related to tree cults, as well as tools of rural culture. The museum, which also performs as a visitor center, also has a library with texts on tree cults in Italy and in Europe.
