  • cerenza is one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy", called "cathedral city" for the imposing temple that dominates the center of the ancient village, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and San Canio (XI-XIII century). As if it were "lying" stands on a cliff, enclosed between the river Bradano and the torrent Fiumarella, standing out at over 800 meters above sea level, and thanks to its position, from the lookout "Torretta", the gaze is lost on the panorama that dives into the changing colors of the high valley of the Bradano. Right there, where the present inhabited area rises, the ancient Acheruntia was born, that for its position the Latin poet Orazio called "caelsae nidum Acherontiae", "the eagle's nest of the high Acerenza", while writers like Tito Livio and Procopius cited it as a "war fortress" and "garrison". Once in the village you can get lost in the alleys of the ancient village where fountains and palaces are added, many of them with internal courtyards, decorated with coats of arms and stone portals.

  • Acerenza is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns of the Alto Bradano, an area with changing colors that can be admired in all its splendor by the "Torretta" belvedere. At the foot of the beautiful "Acheruntia" stands a landscape dominated by wide stretches of vineyards that change shades and charm depending on the seasons and the light of day, but are the constant testimony of the richness of this land where you grow and collects the grapes that give life to the renowned wine Aglianico del Vulture Doc. Unwavering landscapes, culture and history find the cradle in the green basin of Vulture Alto Bradano among millenary springs, ancient woods and monumental trees, where they find their ideal habitat different species.

  • The old "Acheruntia" is situated on a steep plateau between the rivers Fiumarella and Bradano, in an area devoted to the cultivation of vineyards, mainly Aglianico. Finds dating from the VI-IV century B.C. evidence that there were settlements founded here already in ancient times. Artifacts such as: a bronze statue depicting Herakles, the god of Italic peoples, and a tomb of the VI century. In 318 B.C. the settlement was conquered by the Romans, that built a temple dedicated to Hercules Acheruntino. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the town submitted the rule of the Byzantine, and later it was ruled by the Lombards. In 1061 Robert the Guiscard conquered Acerenza and ordered the construction of the magnificent cathedral. It then passed to the Angevin and later to the Aragonese, that proclaimed the town fief and ceded the village to several local Lords and their families.

  • Its historic center has maintained the characteristics of the medieval village with the urbanism to radial pattern around the Lombard Castle (now the seat of the museum of sacred art) and the cathedral, consecrated in 1080 to S. Maria Assunta and S. Canio, patron saint of the city. Built on a previous paleochristian church that, in turn, stood on a pagan temple dedicated to Hercules Acheruntino, the Cathedral is in Romanesque style-Cluniac, on the style of the French Abbey of Cluny. Inside you can admire important pictorial works of Antonio stable and the crypt of the renaissance of the XVI century. Acerenza is the homeland of St Laviero Martyr, a young man who was born in Acerenza in vico Tergia and who died a martyr in Grumento on 17 November 312. Its annual feast of 17 November is preceded by a Triduum of Prayer in the church dedicated to him.

  • Walking through the alleyways of Acerenza you will discover architectures with a strong historical and artistic value, such as the ancient palaces and the imposing Cathedral, as well as a charming country house. Crossing the alleys you will come across ancient historic buildings, finely decorated stone portals and different fountains, until slowly, in all its splendor, the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and San Canio is revealed. This is why Acerenza, together with other Lucanian municipalities, has been included among "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy". Among the prestigious buildings with internal courtyards of particular impact, often decorated with coats of arms of ancient Acheruntine families, Palazzo Loguercio Polosa and Palazzo Gala stand out.
