  • In Valsinni everything revolves around the places, the poems, the events related to the young sixteenth-century poet Isabella Morra. The old part of the village develops around the castle and can only be walked on foot, which makes it particularly evocative. The old houses are close to each other and separated by narrow streets that climb the sides of the rocky spur on which the village stands. The Melidoro Palace, the Mother Church , dedicated to the Assunta, and the mill of Palazzo Mauri, which still has large stone millstones, testify to the ancient local tradition of millers.

  • Valsinni is a very small town. Except for the castle and one or two churches there are not many places to visit in Valsinni. Beware that this town is a challenge to walk as everything leads uphill and sometime almost straight up so be fit if you want to enjoy the visit. The easiest way to explore the town is on foot. The locals can be seen strolling around the streets and the small piazza in afternoons and in evenings. The streets here are quite narrow and mostly traffic free so walking around is easy. The streets in Valsinni are lined with beautiful old houses in pastel colors, the most enjoyable thing is to just walk through the different quarters of the town and experience the village-like atmosphere.

  • Valsinni is a small commune and a town located in the Basilicata region of Italy in the province of Matera. Valsinni is divided into two different parts: the ancient town is located on top of the hill and the newer town is located a little further down in the valley. The town has a history that goes back to centuries. The remains of an Acropolis were found on Monte Coppolo as well as an ancient city wall. It is believed that the town was first founded by the Lucani in 4th century BC and remained an important center till the 14th century.

  • It should also be remembered that the town of Valsinni is dominated by Monte Coppolo, with a strong historical and naturalistic value, since the walls of ancient Lagaria are preserved here, which some scholars identify with the city founded by Epeo, the legendary builder of the Trojan horse. These places, the object of itineraries designed for trekking lovers, have also been the refuge of brigands, like the famous Melidoro brothers from Valsinni. Almost at the top of Monte Coppolo, we begin to delineate the city walls and it seems that at this point there was one of the watch towers of the town where, according to a popular legend, Isabella Morra went to look at the sea. The trekking routes generally also proceed along an uphill sheep-track in the Gallinico wood, which extends close to Mount Coppolo.

  • The sad story of Isabella Morra, the sixteenth-century poetess born in Valsinni and killed by her own brothers who oppose a love affair, was told in the movie Sexum Superando - Isabella Morra. In 2005 the film was directed by the director Marta Bifano and produced by Paul John Flint and in September of the same year it was screened at the Venice Film Festival. The film traces the true story of the young Isabella, considered one of the most appreciated Renaissance petrarchist poetesses, who at the age of 26 was killed by brothers who opposed a presumed relationship with the baron of Bollita - today Nova Siri, in the province of Matera - the Spaniard Diego Sandoval de Castro.

  • The territory of the "comune" includes the ruins of the ancient city of Lagaria. Its most famous buildings which are part of Valsinni's heritage are: the Castle, dating back to the 11th century, where the Italian Renaissance poet Isabella Morra was born, lived and died, the Palazzo Melidoro, the Chiesa Madre (mother church) of medieval origins dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, and the Chiesa dell'Annunziata from the 17th century. The town has an ancient tradition of millers, whose symbol is the mill of Palazzo Mauri, which is still supplied with large stone wheels. The economy of the town is mostly based on agriculture and livestock breeding.

  • The castle of Valsinni is the main attraction for tourists that come to town. The castle was originally built in the 11th century. It is located in the older part of the town on top of a hill and dominates the surrounding regions. The poetess Isabella Morra was born and died in the castle. All the medieval streets in the older section of the town had developed around the castle and the structure still stands unharmed today. Except for a few renovations, much of the original castle is still intact.

  • Valsinni has been ruled by several different families through the centuries, the Sanseverino, the Prince of Salerno, the Vivacqua and then the Morra family. Isabella Morra was a poetess born in the ancient castle in Valsinni and was killed by her brothers. The famous archeological site of Monte Coppolo is located close to Valsinni and has been considered an important archeological place of interest. The Pollino National Park is also located close to Valsinni. The town of Valsinni itself can be actually called a village; it is spread over an area of just 36 sq km and has a population of only 1700. The economy of the town is based mainly on agriculture and livestock breeding.

  • Among the alleys and vaulted landscapes that characterize the village stands out the mother church, dedicated to the Assumption. Valsinni Cathedral is certainly one of the architectures that deserve to be admired. Although the structure of the church is of medieval origins, it should be remembered that it was rebuilt in 1853. Inside the Cathedral of the Assumption houses a splendid wooden crucifix of the fifteenth century.
