  • Final photo of the castello. The profile of Moliterno is dominated by its Castle, deriving from the first Longobard Tower and subsequently amplified and readjusted numerous times. One can visit various religious buildings in the City, among which the Santa Croce Church, the Assunta Mother Church and the San Pietro Chapel, dating back to the XIII century. Walking through the historical centre, however, one will come across many other churches and nobiliary buildings which attract and stimulate the more attentive visitor’s eye.

  • During 1524, the Sanseverino family sold the fief for 39.000 ducats to Don Antonio Carafa, Prince of Stigliano, whose family governed Moliterno until 1682. The Spinelli family succeeded this family and ruled for only three years, then Moliterno passed hands to Fabrizio Pignatelli, Prince of Marsiconuovo. During 1806, after the law which abolished feudal rights, the fief was divided among various existing creditors.

  • An hypothesis, moreover contested, proposes that the village’s name derives from Moles aeterna, referring to the Longobard towers. During 1050 the Normans were in power and had the Castle built. They reigned until 1186, the year of change of power by marriage to the Swabians.

  • From its 847 m s.l.m. for centuries Moliterno dominates the valley that takes its name from the river Agri, a river that flows entirely in Basilicata. It is the second in the region for length after the Basento with 136 km of course, and for basin width after the Bradano, but the first for wealth of waters. The Valle dell'Agri is an iridescent territory, where impressive mountains descending towards the valley give way to rolling hills, in turn alternated with fertile plains, fields and woods with intense shades. Cradle of tradition and culture, the town immersed in the green Lucanian Apennines, in every corner hides pieces of history; from the medieval castle, declared "Monument of national interest" with traces of the multiple dominations suffered is currently undergoing restoration, to the village with its narrow streets lined with ancient buildings and numerous churches and chapels.

  • Very ancient, the origins of Moliterno, municipality of the province of Potenza, seem to be linked to the destruction of the ancient Grumentum, of Roman foundation. Probably already inhabited in pre-Roman times, Moliterno, therefore, would have been built after the destruction of Grumentum, operated by the Saracens between 872 and 975, whose inhabitants who had escaped the massacre would have taken refuge near the Longobard tower. It is true, in fact, that precisely that of the Longobards was the foreign population that inhabited Moliterno, and then passed under the Norman domination to which the castle was built. I took maybe 250 pictures on this evening just after a storm and the clouds were passing by at a very quick rate as was the light changing making a new show and picture for me every few seconds. I managed to pare it down to five castle shots which I hope you enjoy as much as I did capturing.

  • Moliterno became the property of Nicolaus de Moliterno (1239). Carlo I D’Angiò granted the fief to Oddone of Brayda (1269), the General of his cavalry, whose family ruled the village until 1477, the year the Sanseverino family came into power.

  • The true and proper foundation of Moliterno instead, is connected to the continual clashes between the Longobards and Saracens beginning from the IX century. Firstly during this era, a Longobard defensive tower was erected and then, with the destruction of the Grumentum during 975 or 1031 by the Saracens, some fugitives constructed a rural home.

  • The history of Moliterno revolves around the walls of the mighty Norman castle that dominates the historic center. Different hypotheses concern the construction of the manor which, according to the historian Giacomo Racioppi, would have occurred in the twelfth century, and not between VIII and IX, as other scholars argue, to prove this would be the Lombard tower annexed to the castle. The structure was then completed and enriched by the square tower by the Normans.
