  • "Let's go to Papasidero now" said Claire, after we finished with Orsormarso. On the map and indeed, the TomTom, its only 11 km. When the road had an all white sign with a red background (no vehicles) I was not sure. When it said "Bumpy Road" I was not too happy and when it became apparent that the 800m link between the two valleys would just about be passable with a Donkey, I decided to forget the TomTom and read the map instead! 19km detour later, we were the other side of the hill, deep in the Lao gorge on possibly the worst road I have ever driven on in Europe. I would like to say Papasidero is worth it, but frankly, it was disappointing. Half the town is derelict and the other half is being dug up (with emphasis on UP) for water main work from the tank in the old castle. Orsomarso is much nicer IMHO. Highlights were the cat sleeping precariously on a cliff edge and the poster urging land-owners to keep any tinder-dry vegetation on their property under control and report fires to the Civil Defence fire brigade who operate the splendid fleet of Bombardier fire bomber aircraft.
