  • Vi passerer en vakker liten landsby på toppen av en haug og kjører innom. Og den heter nesten det samme som den forrige landsbyen vi besøkte.

Resist still in the toponymy ("Fonte dei Lombardi" and "Piazza dei Greci"), references to the two opposing ethnic groups, who gave life to the city: Lombards, stanziatisi certainly as a result of the barbarian invasions, and Greeks, probably originating, following its destruction by the Saracens, from nearby Velia from which it says the name derives modern (Rivello i.e. Re-Velia). Indeed, the motto of the common recitation even today "Iterum Velia renovata Revellum" (Once Velia, renewed in Rivello). Another likely etymological origin of the name, must be sought in a formation of the iterative type "King Vallare" i.e. fortify again, from which a late Latin Revallo.

  • A strong sense of the sacred distinguishes the community of Rivello as evidenced by the presence of numerous churches, as many as 23, in the historical center alone. In the upper part of the village, on the top of a steep staircase, stands the mother church of San Nicola, with its beautiful façade decorated with typical Neapolitan Baroque art and three portals dating back to 1744. Inside you can admire eighteenth-century altars and stucco ornaments, as well as valuable paintings such as Pentecost by Francesco Oliva and the Adoration of the Pastors by Salvatore Ferrari. Not to be missed is also the oldest crypt of the church itself, with three naves. You can not miss the church and the sixteenth century convent of Sant'Antonio, in the lower part of the town. Built starting in 1512, the convent houses splendid frescoes by Girolamo Todisco (16th century), to which also those who decorate the cloister are attributed. Furthermore, the Last Supper by Pietrafesa is very beautiful, conserved in the refectory. In the church of the convent you can admire valuable paintings of the sixteenth century and an interesting wooden choir of the seventeenth century. Also in the lower part of the village, overlooking a cliff, stands the church of Santa Maria del Poggio, which over the centuries has undergone several interventions. It hosts several paintings such as the Deposition (1720) by Salvatore Ferrari and the Last Supper (XVIII century) by Luca Giordano.

  • Rivello is a medieval village with great charm, in a very scenic position overlooking a valley situated in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. From the artistic point of view, Rivello is a mix of Latin, Lombard and Byzantine culture, a result of the town being occupied at the same time by both the Lombards and the Byzantines. On the one hand there are the churches of St. Nicholas, Santa Barbara and St. Michael “dei Greci”, which were influenced by the Byzantines and on the other hand, there is the Latin church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

  • A harmonious village, with a panoramic position, which offers the visitor breathtaking views: Rivello presents himself to those who observe it for the first time. From the top of a hill, on one side it dominates the valley of the Noce, on the other the eye sweeps up to the peaks of Mount Sirino, while the houses nestled on the ridges of the hills Motta, Serra and Poggio, together with lanes and stairways, confer to the village a disarming beauty. Besides the noble palaces, the architectures that can be admired in Rivello are above all sacred buildings, more than twenty distributed in the historical center, many of which preserve typical elements of Byzantine architecture with a semi-cylindrical apse decorated with hanging arches and

  • The historical center of Rivello can be reached along an intricate interweaving of narrow streets and stairways hung under narrow passages. Wandering around the various corners of the village you come across the Palazzo Megale, whose origins date back to the year 1000 and whose structure includes an external chapel and an internal chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario. The building has furnishings dating back to the early twentieth century, and a particular impact has raised its gaze to the splendid frescoed ceiling, with four painted medallions representing the Belle Arts at the corners. Only 23 historic buildings are concentrated in the historic center, two of which define the two distinct nucleus of the city, the legacy of the dispute between the Longobards and Byzantines, of which Rivello has long been the subject. The upper part extends along the mother church of San Nicola (11th century), the lower part, however, around the cheisa of Santa Maria del Poggio.
